Heres the story:
I want to start out by saying I've expierenced a whole new level in excitement and enjoyment of this sport.
After spending many hours through the years tagging along on Dadshelsdoing everything from shed hunting to planting food plots to summer scouting trips, it was finally time for Cassidy to start her deer hunting career. Or at least I was out of reasons to tell her she couldn't start yet.
Anyways Cassidy swore up and down that she wouldnt shoot a doe. And that she wanted to shoot "Curvy" one of our better prospectswith some good character and history. First night out we set up on a bean field plot that looks like doubletrees deer had visited since the field was completely destroyed. Within a few minutes of getting everything set up in the blind the first deer started coming into the field. 19 deer later a 2 1/2 yr old 8point shows up and she decides that hes good enough and wants to shoot. On the inside I'm thinking oh no not that one, but all that I could say was lets get him. So she gets all set up and BOOM! I see the buck do the "heart kick" but with the blind completely full of smoke I wasn't sure if he was hit. He ran right past us and I couldnt see no holes. I still thought she had hit him though! At this point I realized that wewere both shaking uncontrolably. I was trying to call my brother and couldn't hit the buttons on the phone and she couldn't stand because her legs were jello. Right at that moment I asked her what else she has ever done that put that feeling and excitement in her. Her response was "Nothing ever in my WHOLE life" (shes 9). Well, we got out and looked for blood and found nothing. From the ultimate high to the ultimate low.
The hunt was still on. 3 nights later the wind was right and now she was ready to settle the score with this 8pt. Low and behold right at dark here hes comes out. 30 yards farther away but Cassidy was shooting and that was it. She was shaking before the shot so I talked through it a little better this time and BOOM! Once again the shoot through netting was getting destroyed and the blind looked like Cheech and Chong were out hunting. But this time we got a hit. I found a little bit of blood and some very short hair. Trailed it for a little bit and it quit. Immediately backing out till morning we went home. Cassidy happy that she had connected andshot her first deer and me supporting that feeling of happiness but knowing that we had to have luck on our side to find this deer. The next morning she went to school and I went searching to no avail. The feeling of letting her down by not finding it sucked. And thinking about everthing this kid was through on her first deer hunt was making me think she wasn't going to like this deer hunting thing much longer.
After all that she decided just getting a deer would be great, and that when those old does stand there and snort and blow that eventually they start to bother you. We had this old doe come out,she said she would shoot her. There was alot of moving around in the blind to get the shot and when we were all ready Cassidy says "Dad I'm shaking and its not even a buck" . With that I reassure her to pick the spot and squeeze the trigBOOM! So much for squeeze the trigger! That time I seen the hit and new she just scored one. Cassidy tracked her ownbloodtrail which led to her first deer and one of our most cherished and celebrated moments. Shes definetly hooked and I cant wait till her sisters are there someday too.
