Size Difference in Deer

Take a look at the size difference of a 1 1/2 year old and a 1/2 year old. This picture was taken in Southern Iowa where there is plenty of nutrition for them.

That's a pretty good difference there. I shot one over the weekend, I didn't realize it was a yearling button buck until retrieving him. Most of the yearlings I have seen in this area are a pretty good size.

Wow, I didn't realize how much of a size difference one year made. That picture shows a good comparison!

Good pic. There is a huge difference in only 1 year that's for sure. Imagine if a 3 1/2 or older was standing next to them!

Are you sure that deer is a year and a half old? The small one.

[/ QUOTE ] Looks like that's what he ment. Good post and pict! It's important to study those yearlings with binoculars to determine if they are buttom bucks or not if you intend to harvest does. Sometimes you will be unable to tell as their buttons do not show. As a rule of thumb do not shoot the first yearling that comes to the field as it usually will be a yearling buck. Wait for mama!

thanks for the tip travis, now that i think back this past season, mama would show 10 to 20 min. later. she must hang out on the edge of timber, waiting to see if the coast is clear.
