im not going to sleep tonight.... i went out after practice tonight and i wasnt in my spot 10 mins and a big 8 point steps out... he was quartering away from me and my shot was dead on but alittle high so i gave him 45 mins to a hour.... i found the blood trail and followed it for about 75 yards and then it stopped with no deer in sight... so i backed out and ill try again in the morning ill be sick if i cant find him.... i just dont get it i thought i put a good shot on him but i dont know what happened so ill be praying tonight
 
How much penetration? What do you mean a little high? You think you were above where the ribs attach to the spine or in the boiler room? What did the blood look like?
 
it was a complete pass through the arrow was covered in blood.... in my opinion i think i might have shot him in the liver the blood was real dark thats another reason im thinking it was a liver shot
 
Good job backing out, alot of guys thinking they put a good hit on one would keep tracking. Muddy asked some good questions and many of the boys on here will be able to give you some good info. on the hit if you can answer them. He will be dead by morning so good luck with him.

FYI I hit my bow deer last year in the liver. I lost the trail more than once. I finally determined that the deer was heading a certain direction on a ridge, 200 yards after last blood I found him. So give this a try if you can guess which way he ended up heading.

Good luck tomorrow. A little prayer doesnt hurt either. Hope you find him.
 
I think you will find him, 75 yards isn't nothing even for a lung shot buck with a will to survive. I have tracked them over a 100 yards before. you did the right thing, and I bet you find him in the morning

Assuming you cannot relocate a blood trail, here is some general info that seems to help out...

Hurt deer will tend to travel downhill and towards water.

I think you were smart to back out and will likely find him tomorrow. Good luck.
 
this will be a long night indeed. I had a similar dilemma a few years back. 75 yards is nothing. Just be thankful you didn't bust him out of his bed and really feel crappy. Like said before.....liver hit he's heading for water. Someone posted on my thread at the time that really rang true to me: "That the deer will still be dead when you find him in the morning".
 
You have done the right thing and the previous comments are spot on. Deer will be dead by mid-night and you will most likely have him hung up by noon tomorrow. Good luck and try to be patient. Hope to see the photos soon.

Pass through is good, if you feel like it was liver then I'd bet he'll be laying near the end of your trail. Pray for no rain and get some sleep, you'll find him.
