Slow Going

Well, went out this morning and saw two raccoons. That was it. All the neighboring corn is coming out. I seemed to have the only standing corn (2 football field size) patch in front of my stand. Not even sure how to hunt this afternoon. Supposed to be warm too. Ahhh! By the way, I have my muzzy tag, so I can snipe from a little ways off. Thinking of sitting on the high side of this corn looking down a grass stip that runs the entire field for anything crossing.

You guys seeing anything? Mid October Lull.

I'm hunting early muzz. and its slow going here too. Sun. morn, my buddy was bow hunting 70 yds from me and the buck I'm after walked by him at 32 yds and he let him walk. I've set there every morning since and haven't seen him again..last night, saw a 160 but he was in the timber and never came out to give me a shot. In general, I've been getting skunked not seeing anything in my sits. See a few does here and there, but pretty slow. I think there is a lot of transition right now...the lull with pre-rut, crops coming out, etc...hopefully it picks up soon. Chance of rain this weekend too : ( I will still go out but it will just be wet! Good luck!

It's been really slow for me as well.
Most excitement I've had was a badger messing around by my stand last night for about 5 minutes, which was pretty cool. He was directly under my stand for about 15 seconds and I thought this will probably be the only time in my life where I will be able to spit on a badger without bad things happening to me, so I spit on him. He didn't even notice & eventually wandered off.
Saw one doe & that was it as far as deer are concerned.
All the corn in the area where I hunt should be out by tomorrow, so they won't have near as many places to hide!
I'm really hoping I get my tags filled before the pheasant hunters get them all stirred up!!

People that I have talked to said the mornings have been slow, but they are seeing some activity at night. Last night, I was able to go out and kicked up a doe as I walked in. Then saw a buck walking right through the middle of a bean field about 6:30 and had a decent buck right next to my stand at 6:40 or so. That and 4 coyotes. With the cooler weather predicted next week, it should start to pick up.

this morning was the first morning ive been out all year.I had bucks chasing does all around me.i shot 1 of the does and a 150 incher came up to her then came over and smelled my arrow.then decided to walk right under my stand.I also saw a huge bodied deer on the next ridge over that was chasing some does. if you ever want to get a better look at a buck just leave the binos in the truck, you will need them every time.It wont be long and november will be here.

Hey guys also remember....tomorrow is the full moon...put together with these high temps. no wonder why they aren't on there feet when were in the stand!

Extremely slow here in eastern iowa. Still laughing at spitting on a badger! I have hundreds of trail camera pics up until the last couple of weeks and then almost none!??? I guess that's hunting.

Hunted Mon-Tues-Wed. and hardly saw a deer. Full Moon is a good answer I believe. At the same time I saw more yotes/raccoons than deer. Go figure.

Hit it again tonight. Not a single deer. The corn got picked in front of my ladder stand sometime between this morning and tonight though. I'm guessing all the combines pushed them out. Should be better the next few days, but full moon won't help. It should just keep getting better from here on out. Week from today last year (28th) was my biggest bow buck ever, so it's getting close.

You guys all know as well(some better!) as I , that the fecal material is about to hit the rotary ocillator!!!:D We got a front coming in tommorrow eve! :way: Friends got two big guys on trailcam from the last 2 days! One's a 190 ish NT! Another bud had a 160 type 10 coming up a fenceline lastnite! Wind swirled! He moved off! It's about to begin!!!:D:D

You guys are making me feel alot better! Last week I hunted Friday and saw several doe and three small bucks. This week I've hunted Mon. thru tonight, and didn't see any deer. A few turkey, couple coyote, and coons. I've spooked a few walking in/out. Tonight, I finally heard a buck grunting, so I grunted back. He certainly seemed to take it personally. After I'd respond he'd grunt back and then tear some brush up. This went on for the last 15 min. or so of light.
FINALLY things are happening! :drink2:

Been seeing quite a few does, fawns and small bucks each sit, but the big guys are not showing themselves. I've used it as an opportunity to fill doe tags. Went to a double ladder stand with my son last night and took out a trophy baldy :D

Wasn't going to stat taking time off until the first week of November, but in Kansas a front is blowing in on the 27th and going to drop the lows from mid 40's to low 30's. I think a cold snap like that will get the big boys on their feet.

I only got a limited days to burn, so I got to hit it on good days. Hope Im right with this front blowing through.

I sat on my alfalfa Wednesday night and didn't get out until 8:00 because the deer didn't come out until right at the end of legal shooting hours...:thrwrck:

Had the 150+ I have been after under me at 12 yards at about 745PM. If you ever want to see a cool sight, its a big buck silhouetted with the full moon at his back and the shadow of his antlers on the field. BIG BIG body.

Ironically it was so bright I could see him almost as well as right before dark  Definitely one of the coolest nights I haave experienced in a while.

Been very slow in SW IA, locker shows same thing. I had my first shooter on me at first light today, and I blew it. Big deer, trying to recover. Perfectly planned, poorly executed, thats why they get to be big, I guess.

I got skunked again last night...had my trail cam on this spot since april...my 2 target bucks stayed after velvet dropped and I have pics of them both on my last card pull oct. 15. I don't have a bow (hopefully next year) so I hunt the early Muzz. season hoping to catch some early rut activity. Anways, scouted this spot thurs. and fri. before opening sat. and both nights, like clockwork there were does and bucks all over 30 yds from my camera. I couldn't sit there opening day because the wind wasn't right, sat there Sun. and didn't see a deer. Buddy scouted it Wed. night while I was sitting elsewhere, and all the deer were back. Sat there last night, didn't see a deer! I haven't seen deer all week. I'm hearing lots of movement and shadows are passing in front of me very early (5:50) but as soon as its shooting light, I don't see any. Hopefully this front will help and Sunday looks cooler. Opening day I had lots of deer inside 20 yards in daylight but they were all small. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and keeping at it. Gotta be in the woods to shoot one...

My cousin is hunting in sw iowa and he said it is slow. just texted me and said he shot a yote with the bow. saw ten point i passed last season the first sit, but it was alittle far out. Been seeing 2 1/2's every sit, but needs that big one. He shot a doe the first sit too, but it is the slowest he has seen down there to date. hopefully it picks up for him tonight.

The deer were moving this morning. Although I didn't see anything that I would quailfy as a shooter, the morning was very encouraging. Every grunt call brought in at least 1 buck. Is it safe to say we have entered into Pre-Rut? Has anyone else had luck with the grunt calls or rattles yet this year?

slow here in eastern Iowa as well, I did jump a very large buck that was bedded down this am, any ideas on hunting him in the am?
