SLUG GUN?

Ok guys Im thinking about giving my dad my 1100 slug gun and building a new one, but I have a few questions first. As far as barrels go what would you recommend for sabots?

Ive done some looking and they very a lot in length and twist rate. The Mossberg barrels Ive seen are 1 in 36" twist and 24", the hastings are 1 in 34"twist and 20-26", the remingtons are 1 in 28"twist, and the american slug barrels are 1 in 26"twist and 24".

What is your opinion on the difference in accuracy between an auto-loader and a pump? so what gun, barrel, and bullet combos are you shooting and what kinda accuracy are you achieving?

Im planning on using an 870 or 1100 with a holosight or some other type of electronic sight. Does anyone have any experience with other types of electronic sights

The new Hornady SST slugs are amazing. A friend reccommended them to me and I used them for the first time this year. We hunt mostly out of blinds and stands where shots from 100 to 175 yards are common along the field edges. These slugs are flat shooting and I recommend them to anyone. Not as much blood as from say, Rem Copper solids, but the ballistics are just crazy good. Practice, have a good bipod in the blind or gunrest in the stand and know your ranges and you will be amazed.

Any good, rifled barrel will suit you well. I have seen awesome shooting out of short 18.5 inch rifled barrels all the way up to 26 inch rifled barrels. Just make sure you merry some good optics with that barrel. Anything from 1.75-5, 2-7 or 3-9. I usually shoot everything on 3 power, and then crank it down as far as it will go when walking to and from the blind or stand. Hope this helps alittle.

You can't beat a hastings cantilever barrel. My ole mans 11-87 will shoot amazing groups at 150 yards.

I have little experience with electric sights. Tried them, and do not like them. Always having to adjust the intensity of the light, worrying about battery life, and magnification are all issues that I have had. Can't go wrong with a good 2-7 or 3-9.

I agree, with the distances you can cover today I would put a quality 3X9.

I shoot a 870 topped with a Nikon 3X9. My gun would not shot the Horandy SST's(I have 5.5 boxes for sale). I get sweet groups out of the Winchester Gold Partitions. I think every barrel will like different ammo. Let us know what you get and how it all comes together.

I have also had great groups with the Winchester Partition Gold and before that the BRI (Balistic Reasearch Industries)slugs before the were bought out by Winchester in my 870 with a Hastings. If you are only going to use this gun for deer hunting have the receiver and barrel drilled and pinned to take out the little bit of slop you get from not having a fixed barrel.I now shoot a Marlin Slugmaster topped with a 1x4 Leupold scope.Heavy but a tack driver.I have had some friends that have had problems with battery life on electronic scope one the weather turns cold.Nothing like turning on your scope or looking in it to find out the battery is dead.

I knew it had to be me. I have the Hastings cantilever on my 870 with a leupold 2.5-8x and I can't hit a barn wth that damn thing. Liv, what slugs is he shooting through it? I think I may have the flinches this thing treats me like a punching bag.

I have never been able to get any wichester sabots to shoot out of any of my slug guns but have had good luck with the SST's and buckhammers until this year Ive been shooting an 1100 with a rem slug barrel and was shooting 1 1/2-2" 100yd groups with sst's but when I took the gun out before season I was good to put 5 shots in a 6" circle at 50yds not sure if 3years of ABUSE dropping and falling has maybe took its toll on my holosight or what. As far as scopes go, Ill never own a slug gun with a scope or rifled sights we do a lot of drives between morning and evening sits and nothing can compare to a GOOD electronic sight for moving deer in the brush other than maybe a bird barrel and a bead, but then your screwed for longer shots. Over half the people I hunt with use holosights and we all love them. If your worried about battery life put a new set in each day, not that costly with Iowas short gun seasons. Theres only been one season that I couldnt get through on a set, and the low battery indicator lets you know there low long before its an issue, so I just carry a spare set. But you do get what you pay for I went through a ton of cheap red dot sights before I got the holosight. Granted if it the one I have is junk now its kinda costly to replace every 3years or so but Im REALLY hard on my slug guns, so a scope might not last me any longer

How'd those electronic sights work this year in the frigid cold?

My uncle had to tape a hand warmer to his.

I don't think you can wrong with any of the rifled barrels. I've always used Hastings. Whenever you spend 2 to 3 hundred on a barrel you're going to be tossing about $2/round sabot slugs through it.

Have you considered a 28inch smooth bore? I've seen them pattern as well as rifled barrels, but it may depend on the shooter.

I know it's not much help, but you'll have to just pump different rounds through it to see what works best with your setup.

pump is way more accurate and for me i got a remington 870 with a cantilever barrel and a nikon slug hunter scope on it-i took a 10 point in iowa this year at 371 yards with it-dropped him in his tracks!!!

Are you kiding me or what 371yds is a poke for a centerfire rifle and unheard of with a slug gun. So if this is true what is your gun sighted in for???

no its called PRACTICE using custom hornady slugs and a nikon slug hunter sighted an inch high at 200 yards and i held realy high and made a damn hairbrain but damn lucky shot

Well why dont you just be more defensive. Anyone can walk a bullet in, if you have enough shells that is /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Lets see some picks

I'm not doubting anyone's ability's or honesty /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif , but what kind of energy is a slug packing at that 371 yards anyways?
