Smokeless muzzleloaders I

looking into smokeless muzzleloaders. What are some opinions out there? I have done a little research and looks like a lot of guys are doing Remington 700 conversions in .45 cal. Any suggestions or things I should be aware of? Currently I shoot a knight disc extreme .52 cal 150 grains triple 7 loose with a 375 grain red hot. I plan on only targeting whitetails with this gun.

My opinion, you will be glad you quit smoking and wishing you had done it sooner. Which option depends on what you are after. I like the 700 SA centerfire action or the 700 ML action because there are fewer load limitations compared to most other builds and their are countless options for trigger, stock and other upgrades. Assuming you are in Iowa, the .45 cal would be my recommendation regardless of your gun of choice. A smaller caliber would be fun to try, but since they are not legal in Iowa, I will probably never own one.

As was pointed out to me on this forum a couple of years ago, you can have .45 cal barrel and shoot smaller caliber bullets with a sabot. The regs state: "Muzzleloaders: Flintlock or percussion cap muzzleloading rifles or muskets between .44 and .775 caliber shooting single projectiles;" which refers to the barrel, the bullet is not mentioned. Kind of working the system, as I think they are implying that bullets should be .44 minimally, but they left the door open IMO.

That said, if I was to start over with smokeless, it'd probably be a Rem 700 in .45. With a .45 MMP sabot (https://www.mmpsabots.com/store/blue-sabot/), you could launch a Hornady 140 grain .357 FTX (http://www.hornady.com/store/38-Cal-.357-bullets).

Yes, that is the reason I would go with a .45 cal GUN (not bullet)! Shooting .40 or .357 or other single projectile bullets in them with sabots is a legal option with them. I have taken more than one with Barnes .40 195 grain using sabots. I guess I should have added that .40 or other sub cal guns are gaining quite a following in other states, but they are not legal take for deer in Iowa due to the bore not being legal.
