Interesting observations I’ve seen. The only time I check a deer out is when it’s a friend or something unique/cool. & I always go through the comments. I am happy to say, MOST people are GOOD. Most people are kind.
There’s a few categories of “other” & it’s “interesting” to try to think down on why people say what they do….
a funny one: 1) the internet police!! If u do something incorrect, some dudes duty to correct you. I’ll give u a recent funny example…. I was cutting a deer up & yes, I make a mess- I was hacking into some fat with some friends. I didn’t cut the fur away super great & got some fur on the back strap. Brought it inside …. Washed it. Trimmed it and let it soak in salt water. Pure lean deliciousness!! The amount of comments was hilarious. Correcting me like an old hag of a teacher with a student. That one is funny & no big deal. But internet police watching every detail & correcting anything they can point out that someone gets wrong- pretty funny. :)

2) any big deer…. “bet it’s high fence”. “How many acres do you own?” “Try doing that on public land!” “I don’t see deer like that where I hunt”. “Rich man’s sport”. “Bet he poached it”. “Doesn’t mean you’re a better hunter, try doing that in XYZ state”. WHATEVER!!!!!! Now, what every person with any comment like this doesn’t understand, IMO- deer hunting isn’t a competition. least not how I view it. I personally think folks have this intense drive to post a buck & it bothers them when they don’t or can’t. Jealous when others do.
These are general comments & I only noticed a small handful on buck I shot (like less than 1%- which is great). Why I posted here & the waited days to post anything - because I don’t care about posting on social media. It’s a small bit of fun sharing pics but absolutely not why I hunt & not why others hunt. I’ve said this before to young hunters- hunt because u love it. Hunt for the experience. Hunt for yourself. Or memories with fam/friends. Hunt so u can take in God’s creation & spend time with him. DON’T hunt so u can post a buck or for the ego reasons. Or view it as a competition. IF YOU DO- I believe that reason & the jealousy along side it will eventually ruin the hunting experience for people. It will make it far less enjoyable.
This post is just me thinking a little deeper on why folks comment the way they do. It’s why 1 of the 10 commandments is THOU SHALT NOT COVET. It’s human nature. The only thing I personally will do when I see these comments - when it’s maybe towards a new hunter or really anyone- I’ll speak up and call em out. U rip on a buddy or a stranger, I think u make a fool of yourself but I’ll personally defend someone if appropriate. & with all that said - 99-% of what I see is good, decent & kind. & we can’t lose site of that. I want young hunters to really think about why they hunt & strengthen the reasons we hunt. I believe the future of hunting & hunters themselves will be in a better place if we keep all this in mind IMHO.

I agree 100 percent, Skip. That's what makes sites like this special. Most here get it. What hunting is about. The time spent outdoors, time with friends/family, enjoying nature. Being 100% genuinely happy for others' success. It takes a conscious effort to cast off human nature's pettiness and jealousy, to truly marvel at another person's accomplishment.
Last year I arrowed a buck. Didn't recover him for over a month. Folks here understood. Even congratulated me that I found him. Other social media didn't get to hear anything about it - too many "experts" would've been all over me.
I truly appreciate the folks here.

VERY WELL SAID! No social media for me and never post or send pics over texts. Crazy how fast those things pass to the judgmental and I don’t care to read or listen to it. I have said before very similar to your statement, I don’t hunt or shoot the deer I do to show them off! Don’t really care if ANYONE knows truthfully. but I do enjoy seeing big deer and other peoles’s success. Hunters need to not try to compete with everyone else on trophy deer and they shouldn’t care to justify why they shoot what they do. If it is legal in your area and you are happy shooting it great! If someone hunts public land and shoots a 3 yo 120 inch deer then that is a trophy in itself. In Iowa on managed private land a 5 yo 170 may be the trophy. I was guilty of being jealous of others’ success but have been more fortunate than my share on big deer so have matured for sure. There is a book and several articles about how hunters change over time. I’ll congratulate you Skip on an awesome deer!!

I filmed and traveled for several years- it’s a nasty world. I almost completely walked away from hunting. Social Media has allowed a lot of bad apples with no repercussions.
I have given most of it up and barely post anything buck related (I don’t have social media anymore) so this is really the only place I post anything- but trust me guys- my 120” deer don’t excite anyone

I post some of my kills here and on habitat talk. I do that because I feel I should give back to the sites and add content occasionally instead of only consume. If nobody posts, those sites will die. Anyone who was around before skip bought the site knows what that looks like.
I can't kill sligh sized bucks so I fly under the radar pretty easily. No one is screaming poacher at the guy killing the 150" 8 pt.lol

What I like about IW, very little to no garbage. That said, IMO a significant amount of the drama is generally self inflicted. Keep your circle to good people and flush the rest, problem solved. Social media and TV hunters must have that huge audience and that is where the problems start. I will never ever feel sorry for the click happy group, they reap what they sow. The days of the pioneers of media hunting are long gone unfortunately. I love to watch the old stuff so maybe we need a section for old hunting clips. ;)

I think almost 100% of the guys making negative comments do it because they are jealous. Anyone who knows Skip or most of the other hunters taking great bucks every year knows they work their tails off. They have earned everything they get and nothing was given to them..Some guys choose hard work and dedication for success, and others will always complain. Congrats Skip on everything you have accomplished, it's impressive!
