Every time I’ve found a dead deer in winter or spring I’ve examined hooves. In last 5 years I’ve probably snapped pics of 75-100 hooves like this. 
. Some ehd/BT & I wonder how many might be “hoof rot”? Not sure but I suspect most are in fact ehd/BT late casualties. Late season I would see a lot of deer with infected hooves like this. Check out hooves if u find dead deer winter/spring. Often times ehd/BT will crack hooves & infection later is what ends up getting them.

This is one of a ton of sources & doesn’t dive deep enough into “why it’s growing in prevalence” but here’s one lil example...

Agreed with this. Have saw this appearance of dead deer also! Have also talked to the conservation department in Missouri doing deer study and they found the same prevalence in deformed hooves as a result of suspected EHD survival.Every time I’ve found a dead deer in winter or spring I’ve examined hooves.
