I really didn't head out today with the intention of turkey hunting.
I had gotten some old fiberglass arrows finished up yesterday for my Groves recurve and wanted to see how they shot.
As I was getting ready to leave, I thought.....I'd better take a broadhead along to see how the old Hilbre's shoot also. These items had been aquired to complete the restoration of the Groves back to how it was when I got it in 1972.
I had shot about 20 arrows and was happy with how they performed when I heard a gobble. There I was with no blind and no upper camo. Just a black shirt. I grabbed my facemask and call, then hunkered up in the shawdows of some cedars and gave a few yelps.
The tom responded instantly so I waited about a minute then gave him another series of yelps. Cripes! He sounded off real close. I got ready, and as he cleared a hay bale at about 5 yards, I let the only broadhead tipped arrow I had go. He ran about 20 yards and went down for keeps.
He went right at 21 lbs. had a 9 inch beard and 1 inch spurs.
