Iowa Boy At Heart
Some of you may remember last fall when I posted a series of pictures taken of my then 2.5 year old son shooting his bow (inherited from his older sister) while I was in between oil-spill deployments. Well, he's been bugging me the last couple of weeks to get his target back out and shoot with me. After the 10" of snow we got last Monday (21st) and the temps in the high 50s the rest of the week, I decided it was time to get him back on his string. He's now 3 years, 3 months old and as enthusiastic as ever about his bow! We spent the first 10 minutes or so working on getting his form back, afterwhich he started sticking all three arrows in the target. Granted we are no more than 10 feet from the target, but I want him to just enjoy sticking it right now. I finally showed him how to hold the bow and arrow closer to his eyes so he could look down the shaft better and told him to concentrate on that yellow dot. He did just what I told him and on that very shot, he smacked dead center and shrieked like you've never heard. I don't know who was more excited, him or me, but we were both shouting and high-fiving! I took a photo with my phone and sent that out to a few close friends/family members. Here he is with his first bullseye of many to come!
I thought his older sister would be jealous, but she was truly happy for him and then went to get her bow and go back to practicing! She was getting discouraged, but I explained to her that she's using a totally different bow from much farther away (10 yards) and the bent arrows made a difference in flight at that distance. I also kept telling her I was still very proud of her for hitting the target and working to improve her form. What she doesn't know is that in 3.5 weeks, she's going to get a Nuclear Ice package and her shooting will improve drastically (if I can find someone better than me to teach her). She's all ready told me she'd rather have my buddy Bowman teach her, but I can't complain because he's much better than me anyway.
