Sportsmen of Iowa Post Discussion

If you are not a resident of Iowa and you visit this site regularly you probably posses the following traits:

#1 - You are in the upper echelon of whitetail hunters - your obsession with whitetails, mature bucks, conservation and ethics have steered you here.

#2 - You are probably thick skinned, so to speak, as this site at times is a hot bed for Iowa non-resident hunting regulations.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#1, our passion for the hunting whitetails, brings us all together no matter the state or country we are from. Yet controversy of Iowa non-resident hunting regulations all to often alienates members not residing in Iowa.

Iowa by comparison to it's neighboring states concerning non-resident hunting regulations and resident hunters territorialism is not construed as friendly. I'll be the first to admit this and apologize for alienating anyone - especially on this site. Yet these very same rules, regulations, expressions and etc are the reason that Iowa has world class whitetail hunting, relatively low demand for hunting land and readily available land access for all when compared to neighboring Midwest States.

Non-resident Iowa tag allocation does not meet its demand and many great people are turned away each year. It's hard to explain or justify to a landowner that he can't hunt his own land. It' hard to tell a father that his son can't come home and hunt with the family every year. It's just plain hard to tell a fellow sportsman "NO". Yet the regulations and tag restrictions on Non Resident of Iowa are the core reasons that Iowa still has readily available land access and lower overall deer numbers when compared to other Midwest states. Residents and Non Residents alike can still have great success knocking on doors and gain hunting with a handshake It's these regulations and tag allocations that still make it affordable to purchase land within Iowa's boundaries for all. It's these regulations and tag allocations that provide us with world-class whitetail hunting and this is why they are so sacred to the majority of Iowa hunters.

We discuss Iowa hunting issues here and because of so much controversy concerning our tag allocations etc at this time of the year the term "non-residents" is thrown around loosely. My point overall is that it is tough to discuss these issues without making people feel alienated, however the Iowawhitetail staff will do it's best at making everyone feel at home.

You are a fellow Sportsman and deserve that respect. Stay thick skinned and I'll leave you with our Mission statement.

I think you guys should be proud for standing up for what you know is right Kent. be proud to be part of those positive organizations and stick together.

I know that if the day ever comes when the stuff hits the fan here, I wish it were possible to have alot of you guys on "my team".

Well I am a non-resident and I have never felt alienated on this site because of that. I don't see the Iowa DNR--or the IW--stance as "anti-non-resident", but rather, "pro-deer- management." I believe that most thinking deer hunters recognize that one of the reasons you have what you have there is because of the NR restrictions. In fact, as a resident of MN, I can tell you that many, many guys I talk to here wish we could do what you guys do. Not to keep outsiders out, but to manage deer more thoughtfully and effectively.

I believe that the vast majority of discussions here remain polite and intelligent, and any deer hunter from any state would feel welcome to post his/her opinion. I, for one, appreciate the opportunity to do so.

I have never talked to someone that questioned why Iowa doesnt allow everyone to hunt everyyear. No-doubt Iowa's pro-deer-management plan needs to be "excessive." You cant have the best state in the US for deer hunting unless your doing something right.
And regarding grasshopper's post espesially the last paragraph I am total agreement.

One point that may be being overlooked in OneCam's post above, is the fact that Iowa within it's dynamic has fewer deer compared to it's carrying capicity, than many other Midwest States do under the unlimited NR dynamic.

It is a hard sell that regulation changes to increase NR tag allocation will aid in deer population control in the state of Iowa. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

In the last few years I've had phone calls and emails from hundreds of non residents. Some have started off very poorly.I answer everyone of them and really like to do so by phone, more personable.
Can't say we have always parted ways on friendly terms but by in large most have. I try to explain we aren't anti non res, we have some awesome deer hunting and would like to keep it that way.
Usually ask them to put the shoe on the other foot. They are the res and I'm the non res. How much are you going to give up? Grudgingly most will admit they wouldn't change anything.

I have family and friends that would love to hunt Iowa every year, they realize why the hunting is so good and accept the fact they won't be hunting here every year.
