Straight up disgusting...

muddy

I won the lottery today at work... tomorrow I will be heading down to the flooded town of Oakville, Iowa to do some emergency flood water sampling/testing. I guess this is where the Iowa River meets the Mississippi so I have no idea what to expect.

The "bonus" is that the reports I have say that there are roughly 36,000 head of hogs in the area and that over 90% of them are dead and floating around.

I am NOT excited about the prospects of the morning.

Anybody know if I should try and find a respirator? What bad nasties would be airborne with all the dead hog bodies?

I heard that yesterday some time the Sheriff Dept shot about 1000 pigs that were tearing up the levies down that way. I also saw some news film showing some pigs that looked like they has swam up onto a building roof surrounded by water. Try to keep your head above water.

Muddy, there shouldn't be to many air bourne disease due to the dead hogs, since they are recently killed. If it was a "dead" pile or some place that has had dead pig, sheep, cattle, ie.. then I would worry about having a respirator of some type. All your going to contend with is a rank smell, and I probably wouldn't drink the water /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Sounds like the fine taxpayers of Iowa might get there moneys worth from you for a change. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
Stay downwind!

Yeah, I don't think they have had enough time to get real ripe. Can you postpone your trip a couple of days? /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I notice it takes "roadkills" only a day or two now and they smell right fine... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I think floaters might be different than dry landers. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Gosh I sure wish I could help Muddy with those tests.... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Muddy. I was at work today along the river and we kept hearing pigs squealing. We spotted 3 medium sized pigs floating down the river with there heads sticking up out of the water. I guess they floated down from Oakville all the way to Burlington.Id guess a minimum of 15 miles? Today in the Hawkeye newspaper it showed a couple pictures of the hogs that were in Oakville and was talking about them floating down to Burlinton around the Memorial Auditorium. Im gonna try to find the pics and post them. Your gonna love it. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif A couple Hog Farmers "you know how tough they are" said the only way they can explain the smell of Oakville is DEATH.

Sweet, sort of wild hogs in Iowa. Let's go hunting!!! Muddy, it can't be any worse than that one buck I gutted /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Well, I sure wouldn't wade in the water with out some "protection". You'll be wading in all the collective crap from upstream which is a lot worse than a few hundred dead hogs. In fact, you may be wadding in some of the treasures that I routinly deposit in the Iowa City sewage system. Just look for a giant turd with 3-4 rats hanging onto it. That'll be from me.

I wouldn't worry about air borne pathogens unless you have to enter an enclosed area or you are exposed to water suspeneded in air like a mist or even a big splash. Be sure and wear big glasses to protect your eyes/conjuntiva. The respirator may be necessary for the stench though. Ask your sweety to bring you home an N95 mask tonight. It will cover you for inhaled pathogens and will help cut the stench a little bit. A very littel bit. Do the old mentholatum up the nose trick.

Remember the smell of Stubby 9, take that times about 50 and you will have your day tomorrow, I so envy you /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

There are over 36,000 hogs down in that area Bonker... want to come with?

Like the guy at the rendering plant told me, the smell can only get so bad, then you either get used to it or pass out.

Strike up a big ole cigar. Keep the skitters off yu also. Catfish are going to weigh 50 lbs. this fall.

Just find a Fresh one muddy, Then you got free meat for the rest of the year /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

This comes from the Hawkeye Newspaper.

After learning that a group of about a dozen pigs were euthanized by shooting, animal rights activist group PETA has asked Des Moines County Attorney Pat Jackson to look into the matter and file charges against the farmers.

In a letter sent to Jackson Thursday, representatives from that group said "failing to ensure the safety of animals threatened by a natural disaster appears to be a violation of state law," which they say can be classified as "neglect which results in serious injury to or the death of livestock."

"It's too late to save the pigs who valiantly fought for their lives by swimming miles through floodwaters after they were left to drown, but we can make sure that whoever is responsible for their suffering is brought to justice," said Tracy Reiman, PETA vice president, adding, "We can also spare millions of other intelligent, sensitive pigs from a lifetime of misery by not eating them."

When you get down there youre gonna be dealing with a bunch of PETA's trying to save the hogs. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif Anyone wanna bet that Muddy has a nervous breakdown and starts saving the porkers one at a time. Pulling them into his boat and bringing them to shore. "Man rescues 1,984 Hogs in 4 hours, PETA then sues him for not using proper flotation devices on the hogs".
