Two Muscatine men have been charged with shooting a trumpeter swan on New Year's Eve at Cone Marsh in northern Louisa County.

Jared Bloom, 26, and Stanley Woodard, 51, were charged with taking of protected non-game species and fined $182 each.

The incident occurred around 1:50 p.m., and was reported by three goose hunters in the area. According to an investigative report, both men allegedly shot as the swan passed over the marsh.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources also assessed $1,500 in damages, which was divided into $750 each for Bloom and Woodard because it was not determined who fired the killing shot.

The court date is set for Jan. 17 in Louisa County.

In North Dakota, you can get 1 trumpeter swan tag a year.....
i would love to shoot one of those and put it on my wall, but probably only one....huge bird,
these guys that are willing to break the law just to kill something cool dont deserve to hunt anything anywhere
just my opinion

In north dakota those are tundra swans I believe. I don't think it is legal in any state to shoot trumpter swans.

These two guys should be hunting waterfowl if they can't tell what they can and can't shoot. Morons!

I think every magazine should do a page of shame with stories and pictures. There is just no excuse for mistaking a swan for any other type of waterfowl. Crazy.

A picture page of shame would be great!

For starters,You can't mistake a swan for a canada.Wrong color and a lot longer neck.Sure can't be confused with a snow due to size. These idiots have no business hunting waterfowl.

I'm guessing the knew exactly what they were shooting and thought they could get away with it.

There is no way they could be mistaken for a snow..I saw 6 swans the other day out feeding in a field about a half mile out, and they were huge..just a shame...

There is one out at the Big Mill hunting area right now here in Bellevue that I saw today, I wonder how long it's been there? I could see someone driving along the road and shooting it real easy.

I wonder if the one they shot had a neck band?

My son actually was there when they released 3 swans at Cone Marsh a few years ago. He kept up with the return of them every year. Only two would return, the last few years. Who knows, now maybe the original trio is down to one. I know my son wasn't very happy with the news.
