Been shooting Maasai 200 single bevels the last few years. Originally set up for elk, and I never saw a reason to change for whitetails. This year I went mule deer hunting in Nevada and decided to flatten my trajectory a bit, so I switched to Swhacker 2 blade expandables. No issues at all; in fact, I was impressed with their performance on my MN deer.
Fast forward to November 1st. I was wrapping up an all-day sit on a big piece of public and had seen nine bucks, with a solid 3.5-year-old 130 being the best so far. Great hunt. Then I spotted a super thick mature 8 point with an 8 inch kicker cutting across an open field. I rattled, and he came in on a dime. Dead calm day, and he eased in slow, like they do when they can’t get downwind of your location. He finally turned broadside at four yards, looking away. Perfect. I drew back, and the broadhead rattled. He heard it, bolted, and that was that.
I had heard the noise before in practice, but didn’t think it was loud enough to matter. Turns out, it was.
Too late in the season to switch setups, so I fixed it with a small dab of bow wax in the expandable grooves. Quieted them right down. If anyone else is running mechanicals and notices even a slight rattle, I’d highly recommend the same trick.
