Nebraska Teen Injured While Pheasant Hunting Saturday

DES MOINES – A Nebraska teenager sustained a shotgun blast to the back of his head while pheasant hunting Saturday with his father in Page County.

Ryan Rearick, 18, of Omaha, Neb., was hit in the back of the head at short range from a shotgun being carried and accidentally fired by his father, Christopher Rearick, also of Omaha, Neb.

Ryan Rearick was transported by Essex Fire and Rescue to Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak then airlifted to Creighton University Medical Center where he was reportedly in stable condition and is expected to survive his wound.

The incident occurred shortly before 10:30 a.m. Saturday east of Essex in Page County. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources was assisted on the scene by the Page County Sheriff’s Department and Essex Fire and Rescue.

The incident remains under investigation by the DNR.

Short range with a shotgun, oh man, that's bad. I see "airlifted". I'd be beyond crushed as a dad. Thoughts & prayers with these guys.

Someone that I know, and spoke with today, knows this man through work connections. The good news is that the boy does not have life threatening injuries.

I cannot imagine a worse feeling than being a parent and injuring your own child, albeit in an accident. I hope the boy makes a full recovery and soon.
