Just curious if anyone on here has been down to Texas for a spring turkey hunt and if so could recommend a place to hunt. I have just started looking into this but if the price is right I would like to do it this year. Any information that anyone can provide that woudl be great.

Actually, I am looking to smack a Rio as it will be the third leg of the slam so if anyone has good info. on Kansas, Oklahoma, etc. I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks fellas

I went down there in Spring 2007 and I'm going back this April. I highly recommend it! I missed my Rio because he snuck in behind me as I was working two toms in front of me. Amazingly, he ducked his head right as I pulled the trigger and then my pump jammed. The ranch I have is a private place through a friend of my brother-in-law, but I can check around to see what other places come with some recommendations. A friend of mine out here in AZ is a deer/turkey guide in Mexico, but likely knows some reputable outfits in Texas. We also have Rios in extreme NW Arizona if that interests you, but its a lottery system for the tags. If you can get drawn up there (Unit 13B), the Wildlife Manager (CO) is a good friend of mine and I can hook you up. Texas is over-the-counter and only like $125 for the tag. Let me do some digging. When do you need to know by?

Good luck!

AZHunter,

Thanks for the info. Not a huge rush on letting me know, we are all flexible on dates and such that we will be hunting. I love AZ and would consider coming back out there to hunt turkeys but I have heard it is fairly difficult to draw. Anyhow, any information that you can pass along I would greatly appreciate. Good luck down in TX this year.

I've got some feelers out, including with some friends that hunted last spring over near Abilene (I think) and will get back with you. I don't know about the difficulty of actually getting drawn for turkey in AZ as a NR, but I know the system doesn't exactly favor NRs. You have to buy a $151 license just to put in for the draw, on top of the $77 tag. If you don't get drawn, you get all but $7.50 of the tag $$ along with a bonus point, but are stuck with a NR license. Of course, if memory serves me correctly, you used to live in Flagstaff, so you know you've got a place here and we can put that license to use! Archery deer is mostly OTC and is 3 weeks in August/Sept and then again from mid-end of Dec. 10% of all tags go to NRs so eventually, with a bonus point or two, it will come to fruition and I know some really good areas. Will be in touch as soon as I hear anything.

this might help. Rio Rojo outfitters is just across the red river from texas in oklahoma, I hunted there last year and had great success. We killed 4 rios in 2 1/2 days. They have a ton of birds and you can either hunt with Tanner, who is the outfitter or go by yourself if you prefer, which is what i wanted and some places dont allow you to do that. I would recommend them highly, first class lodging and his wife Tara makes unbelievable meals for the hunters. Hope this helps, and good luck with your slam, I have the Osceola left so if you have any leads on Florida hunts let me know.

Buffalo Creek Outfitters are top notch. Took three in two days in 2008 with archery tackle, although you can use any weapon. Lots of Rios. Texas is a tough state and can be hot or cold. Hunted there alot over the years but nothing was as good as Buffalo Creek on the OK/TX border. You can hunt either state. 580-821-1420. Ask for Joel. They book early so I'd call them as 2010 may be booked?

Once you are ready for Florida shoot me a PM. Hunted with a great outfit down there in 2006 and 2007, lots of fun chasin swamp birds :)

Fellas, I appreciate all the suggestions. I am gonna start making the calls in the next week or so.

AZHunter,

I am going to start puttin in for AZ elk tags this year too, so I am gonna have to purchase the NR license regardless. I might have to start putting in for some additional animals in order to get some bonus points. I will definitely take you up on coming out a time or too. I had no clue the deer tags were over the counter, that makes the license cost a bit less of a pain if I can get out there and chase some critters around. My folks just bought a place north of Phoenix so I may just have to start planning some trips to visit them in Sept. every year and add some time in to hunt.

Took three birds in two days on the okie border on public ground one year and the next year we stayed further north and killed three birds in three days on public ground. A little more work but really it wasn't that difficult. Didn't see many hunters either. Can't help on an outfitter. Kansas is a shooting match if you want a pure Rio you need to get to the far west is what the biologist told us after we proudly flopped our two birds up for him to see that were from south central kansas... :D Both states offer great public hunting. :way:

Kratz-I finally heard from a friend that turkey hunted over by Abilene last year and loved it. They hunted at Buffalo Mountain Ranch (http://www.buffalomountainhunts.com/turkeyhunts/) and it looks like its archery/muzzleloader only. 2 birds for about $650 on a 3-day hunt. My friends have hunted deer, turkey, elk, and bison there for the last 3 years and love it.

Brian,

Thanks for the update. I will take a look at this outfitter and see if they have some opening left. I would love to get down there and whack some Rios this year. Thanks again.
