Thanking my lucky stars...

Was putting up a tree stand yesterday morning with a buddy when a branch that I have used many times before broke. I fell backward 16 feet to the ground landing on my back/shoulders. My head pounded the ground pretty hard as well. I got right up but started getting dizzy and feeling nauseous shortly after. I'm pretty stiff and sore today but it's better than being in the hospital or worse.

Be careful out there.

That's a pretty fair distance to fall. So very glad to hear that you are alright.

Be aware that your symptoms indicate a concussion and you really should see a physician soon. I have been an EMT for 13 years now and I hope that you choose to get lokoed at. I hate to shed bad news, but I also would hate to see something happen to you preventing you from hunting. Concusions, if not treated properly, can have long lasting effects.

Not to make you look like a fool, but this is a perfect example of why everyone should be using a good quality safety harness at all times! A safety harness would have prevented the fall.

You had a look at death and survived...I would count your blessings and take releases advise on the saftey harness. Although the outcome of this fall was reasonably harmless, the next could be life threatening or worse, paralysis.

Glad you're ok, but I'm with release hunter. Your syptoms sound like mine did. That soreness turned into a broken neck so the concussion ended up the least of my worries. Go see a doctor.

deernstuff...no kidding??? You didn't even know you had a broken neck?? Now I'm nervous...

As for the safety harness...how do you guys get down without unhooking your safety device?

Tomo

you can get a nice 20-30 foot rope to tie at the level of the treestands base(around the tree) and tie a prussic knot on. As you decend the tree, just slide the prussic knot down with you.

It's a real pain in the a$$ but it can be done.I have no problem's when I'm using my climber but when I'm in the permanent's it is a pain. You have to just keep moving everthing down and around the limb's until your down.Glad to here that you are ok.
LET"S ALL BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!!

Tomo,
I figured out 4 days later when the soreness wouldn't go away and I finally went to the doctor. They wouldn't let me get up off the xray table. Straight to the specialist.

As others have suggested, get checked out by a doctor. When I fell in 96 I landed on my legs and hip. Limped away and toughed it out. When the infection set in a week later I almost lost my legs. Now I only have about 30 to 40% circulation in them and cannot walk long disstances. Please have a Doc check you out. Falls can't be taken lightly.

ifell out of a tree 2 years ago i over stepped my peg and stepped on a limb and it broke and i fell about 15 feet and the peg caught my side and caught me from my belt loop to my arm pit and i cracked three ribs and caught my self bad and i had to limp my way back to the truck two hundred yards away and ended up in the hospital for a couple hours
it no tfun i tell u that i always wear my harness now no matter wut and still to this day im afraid of it happeneing again how bout u other guys who fell r u guys still alittle nervous about fallin again

Tomo,
I did the same exact thing 5 years ago except mine was closer to 18 ft.. I got the whole dizzy thing as well and after crawling several hundred yards and driving to the hospital (still don't remember that) and literally falling out of my truck into the ER. They wanted to cut off the camos and LaCrosse, that is when I came to my senses and vetoed that ASAP. I had a major concussion, caught a brach across the back of the head on the fall down and they figured that helped falling relaxed instead of all tensed up. Go get checked out just to make sure!
Go get checked out!

Tomo take a look at the Seat o the Pants harness system. It can be used while climbing and it is a good harness system that, I believe, could be used as shredder describe as well. I fell last year when a chain on a heavy home made stand broke. My son watched the whole thing happen and barely got out of the way. If the stand hadn't fallen on my leg I would have been completely unharmed except for having the wind knocked out of me. Then I had a metal screw in step break under my weight in August. I could not believe these things happened to me but they did and I owe it to my family to be more careful, cost and convenience aside. Take care of your self and may God give you a speedy recovery.

Tomo,

Glad you're ok (but get it checked out)and thanks for sharing even though you may be a bit embarrassed to have fallen. It serves as a good reminder to all of us here to be careful and use a full-body harness.

Thanks for taking our advice. I am glad everything is ok. It is better to error on the side of safety. I am sure it clears your mind to know that you got checked out.
