I made a few interesting discoveries today about the buck that I shot in KS last weekend. The harvest thread is located here: http://iowawhitetail.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32093
KCCyclone and I were certain that he had his sheds from last year.
This is the buck that I shot
And these are the sheds
Notice the identical location of the kicker on his left G2, the bump that formed on his right G2 (we thought that it just bladed out this year) and the stickers around the bases of the sheds. You can't actually see all of the stickers on the harvest photos, but they are almost identical to the ones on the sheds.
We thought for sure that this was the same buck. The shape of the beams and the shape of the tines are dead on between the sheds and the buck I shot. We just thought that his brows blew up this year and he grew a G4 on his right side and lost length in the one on his left side. I found out this morning that we were incorrect.
I don't know why, but I had completely forgotten about these trail cam pics from last year. There is no doubt that this is my deer. I believe that he was a 4.5 last year and a 5.5 this year when I shot him. These pics were less than 200 yards from where I shot him and are the only pictures that I have of him. I can't believe that I forgot about these photos.
It's amazing how similar genetics can be in one area. We've got pictures of another big nine this year with a G2 kicker just like these.
Once I realized this, I immediately emailed KCCyclone that I owed him a set of sheds. He had gladly given them to me when he thought that they belonged to my buck (that's a true friend!). I'm more than happy to give them back to him, especially since they are his best matched set to date.
I then made another discovery that really made my day. I have one of my bucks sheds from his 2.5 year old rack. I remembered finding it last year after the spring CRP burn on our farm. It looked to be about 3 years old when I found it, but I'm pretty certain that it came off of my deer. Obviously we have a strong genetic line on this farm, but the G2's are identical, the shape of the main beam is identical, he had long brows for a 2.5 and they were starting to curve.
The shed isn't near as big as it looks in the pictures, but I'm about 95% sure that this is my bucks 2.5 year old rack. The G3 was chewed off and the tip of the beam was gnawed pretty bad. It's not a matched set, but it will still be a cool addition to the display when I get my mount back.
I just thought you guys might like to see this interesting turn of events. I know that KCC is happy to be getting his sheds back and that means that we've got one more shooter running around on our farm!:way:
