The Hunt Never Ends....
In the summer of 2010 a buck showed up that I knew had the potential to turn into something special. Judging by the size of his body, he was a young deer, with a big rack, and one that I hoped wouldn't walk by me because I wasn't sure if I could pass him up.
I ended up filling my bow tag early and never had the chance to step foot on the farm where the 10pt lived, however my good friend Brent Larson drew an Iowa bow tag and I had promised him that if he ever did that I would set him up on some good farms.
On November 5th Brent arrived and the weather was perfect. A frosty morning with no wind in November is what we all dream of, and Brent had this type of morning. After looking at trail cam pictures, and having a south wind, Brent and I decided that the farm where the 10 lived was the best option for his first morning hunt.
After dropping Brent off at the farm, I went to another to attempt to fill one of my doe tags. Less than an hour after the sun rised, I got a call from Brent saying that he had just hit a nice 10 but he hit him high. After watching the video we felt that he may have only gotten one lung. I was actuallly surprised that Brent didn't spine the buck. We gave him until the next morning, and after an entire of day of searching could not find the buck. The 10 never showed up on my trail cameras the rest of the season and I never came across his sheds. In all honestly, I felt that he was likely dead somewhere due to the high shot.
Here is a link to an intro video that Brent produced....the 10 is on the video at the 10-14second mark and 2:25second mark.

Today, I got a surprise. The 10 showed back up on the same cameras that I got photos of him on last year.....and he 'blew up.' I decided to name him 'JackHammer' after Brent (Brent works construction). The scar from the exit wound is very noticeable, and looks to be almost dead center in the kill zone. How this deer is still alive is beyond me? Can a deer survive on one lung?

The exit wound scar is very evident in this photo.
Brent was more than bummed out after hitting him high last year, but as we all know it happens to all of us. It's nice to know that JackHammer survived, and shows us all how truely tough these animals are.
As they saying goes, 'everything happens for a reason.' Who knows, maybe he'll cross paths with myself or hunting buddies come November :way:
To be continued.....
