The Story of JackHammer continues

The Hunt Never Ends....
In the summer of 2010 a buck showed up that I knew had the potential to turn into something special. Judging by the size of his body, he was a young deer, with a big rack, and one that I hoped wouldn't walk by me because I wasn't sure if I could pass him up.

I ended up filling my bow tag early and never had the chance to step foot on the farm where the 10pt lived, however my good friend Brent Larson drew an Iowa bow tag and I had promised him that if he ever did that I would set him up on some good farms.

On November 5th Brent arrived and the weather was perfect. A frosty morning with no wind in November is what we all dream of, and Brent had this type of morning. After looking at trail cam pictures, and having a south wind, Brent and I decided that the farm where the 10 lived was the best option for his first morning hunt.

After dropping Brent off at the farm, I went to another to attempt to fill one of my doe tags. Less than an hour after the sun rised, I got a call from Brent saying that he had just hit a nice 10 but he hit him high. After watching the video we felt that he may have only gotten one lung. I was actuallly surprised that Brent didn't spine the buck. We gave him until the next morning, and after an entire of day of searching could not find the buck. The 10 never showed up on my trail cameras the rest of the season and I never came across his sheds. In all honestly, I felt that he was likely dead somewhere due to the high shot.

Here is a link to an intro video that Brent produced....the 10 is on the video at the 10-14second mark and 2:25second mark.

Today, I got a surprise. The 10 showed back up on the same cameras that I got photos of him on last year.....and he 'blew up.' I decided to name him 'JackHammer' after Brent (Brent works construction). The scar from the exit wound is very noticeable, and looks to be almost dead center in the kill zone. How this deer is still alive is beyond me? Can a deer survive on one lung?

The exit wound scar is very evident in this photo.

Brent was more than bummed out after hitting him high last year, but as we all know it happens to all of us. It's nice to know that JackHammer survived, and shows us all how truely tough these animals are.

As they saying goes, 'everything happens for a reason.' Who knows, maybe he'll cross paths with myself or hunting buddies come November :way:

To be continued.....

Very Cool!!!They really are tough and remarkable no doubt about it. I hope he walks by your stand this fall for you. Good luck with him and thanks for sharing.

Man if he put on that much in 1 year after being hit, imagine what he would have grown without being hit, or another year on him...wow:drink1:

It always amazes me how quick A buck can heal from a non fatal shot.Especially the high shot, and continue to get better.I have seen bucks survive a one lung hit, but they usually suffer for it. I have tracked high hit deer most of the night, take a break and track them a good part of the next day before the blood stops, then when I am sure they are dead somewhere, I get new pictures.I also have found that when bloodtrailing a high hit buck, and he opens up every scrape he crosses, its time to give up.

That buck is amazing. Is it just me or does his body look sickly? Possibly from the wound? He is a hammer no matter how ya look at him.

Unbelievable deer...for him to survive that hit from last year is crazy. I hope you get a crack at him this fall. Good luck...thanks for sharing! Awesome story

Sureshot,

What a left side that deer has !!! Good luck with that great buck. The cam images with the evidence of the injury are pretty special.

Not going to make it down this year. Hope you guys have good luck with the track work this next week.

Brent

Great deer and awesome story.. If he only has one lung left, I bet his cardio sucks. You could prolly just chase him for a bit till he gets winded, then shoot him.. Good Luck on him this year..

That's is one heck of a buck, it is very fortunate he survived, it would have been a shame to have lost him

He's a giant Chris, glad things turned out for the best! I bet he missed both lungs as I don't think he would survive with a hit lung. I one-lunged my buck last year and he was in pretty rough shape after he layed overnight. Hopefully you can put one where it counts this year :way:

Man! What ever! But that does not look like a HIGH hit to me????????? It is what it is! The proof is there ! But Man! I gotta aim lower if thats high!!!
