There Breeding

My Dad watched a real nice buck Breed a doe three times south of Ames last night. The time has begun!

I have seen three dead does on the highway in my 20 mile drive to work Monday so that tells me things are heating up. I have decided to take next week off instead of the following week for this reason.

Just a few thoughts on this.....

There will always be a small percentage of does that come into estrus early, as well as a small percentage of does which will cycle late.

IMO, peak breeding is still a ways out there.

Nice to know things are picking up though.

I suspect that young does without fawns will go through an estrus cycle early. If it is like other ruminant species, that first estus cycle is often infertile. If that is the case expect them to be locked down again in three weeks.

Ghost,
I agree with you totally.
Same thing happens every year. The pre rut like you posted before is happening now. The cooler weather IMO is a blessing for seeing more deer right now. The next three weeks should be very good. Good luck to everyone.

[/ QUOTE ] Ghost I'm looking to get in on the peak of the prerut myself, I never liked hunting the peak of the rut itself because the big bucks are usually off somewhere laying up with does and not moving or responding to calling. I like hunting after the peak of the rut around Thanksgiving also for the same reason.

After shining last night and hunting the last few days, I haven't seen much sign of anything happening. All the bucks last night didn't even seem interested in the does, they weren't even hanging around them. Then hunting I have seen tons of does with no bucks anywhere. Maybe Central Iowa is just a little slow to get started

[/ QUOTE ]I agree with everything here stated from both of these guys. It is all on the length of the day with daylight that causes most of the does to go into heat. Peak is usually the 2nd week in Nov and the 1st week in Nov during the pre rut, chasing stage is the time to be out and then when the does are coming out of heat towards the end of Nov is another great time to be out. I myself have never seen much buck movement during the peak in the 2nd week because as stated a buck takes a doe off someone where and keeps her isolated and breeds her. You want to hunt the pre rut and the post rut.

[/ QUOTE ] Well hopefully this warm snap coming on Sunday into Monday won't stop things from happening, if it does I'll just go to work and take off some days the following week.

We'll guys the signs around my area are showing the pre-rut is starting. I watched a nice buck chase a doe in a bean feild last night. I'll be in the stand a lot the next three weeks.

Next week will be rocking. Wed to the following Wed.

I have not seen any chasing where I am hunting.
