Thermacell

Cornfed

Bowhunting Addict
I have heard a few claim this device works good as a bug repellent.... how do you wear the device? In a pocket... hook it on your stand, etc? Do you have to light it with a match or does it have some sort of starter?

I talked to a relative who used it on a bear hunt this fall. He said that it worked awesome. He forgot it one night and the skeeters ate him up. He said that they would even use one sitting around camp. His claim was that you could see them 10 feet away but none on or close. He swore by it. He strapped his to the tree with a carrying case.

I have one and I love it. I bought the carrying case for it. You can hook it right to your stand, I even hook mine right on my 3D quiver. It is self igniting, uses a butane cell, and scent matts. It will last about 12 hours on one cell. Well worth the $19.99, Central Archery in DSM has them in stock. I know a few guys that went bear hunting with them, and said they would never go again without one.

Good Luck

I used one in Alaska and loved it. Big ones up there, some looked like small hummingbirds.

Thermacell

I was a doubting thomas before seeing the Thermacell in action. You can sometimes catch them on clearance at Menards too. I would say it is as valuable as a good hunting knife when you need it.

I am on our local NWTF commitee and I am a sponser every year and this year they gave a thermacell to all sponsors. So I am glad to hear that they do work. I just figured that they were a gimmic.. I'll have to try it the next time I go bear hunting...

It sounds like they are certainly worth considering... however, how well do they work if there is an occasional breeze or variable wind currents. It would seem that it would have to be dead calm for them to be very effective.

I have tried one out this summer. In a slight breeze I found it is still effective, you may have to put it up wind a little though. Yes it does produce some odor and smoke, not to bad. It takes about 10 or 15 mins. to start to work but it really works. I turned it off just to see the difference, about 4 mins. later I was being ate up.

Thats one thing I was unsure of. I'm still undecided on using it for deer season for that. I had to be close to it to smell anything but deer smell better then me. I have heard alot of people doing it though.
