Has anyone seen this pic? There's no way this can be real.

Never seen it, kind of interesting though, is that another leg sticking out of his back

I just got that pic in my email. I don't know if it can happen to deer but unchecked hooves can grow to enormous proportions. Some horses (usually very old and not moving much) get that way if they aren't taken to the farrier. I wouldn't think a deer with as much moving around as they do would have much chance of it.

Maybe he was from the Ammunition Plant and drank some funky water or something...

( my email said it was a roadkill by Alma)

I thought that was just on here. I belive it is called "foundered" too much protine in the diet or something like that.

Reminds me of crusty-old-man toenails. Hows that for a visual?

The deer was hit and killed by a truck near Alma, WI. According to a local newspaper, biologists speculated that a diet high in proteins and minerals caused the deer to grow those long, curved hooves.

We ran the photo by a couple of our resident scientists and they said that while they may be off base, they suspect the animal was from a captive herd. They say that when a deer is fed excessive starch, primarily corn, founder lesions like elongated hooves can occur. EHD (Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease) and other diseases often cause deer hooves to crack, slough, etc., but not elongate and curve like that.

Body and rack wise, the buck was in good shape. Our biologists believe he was able to survive and prosper on those hooves because he was on welfare. They point out that many deer become dependant on backyard feeders and thus consume excessive corn/starch. While the animals might not be captive behind a fence or in a compound per se, they are conditioned to feed where groceries are easily accessible.

It's Real. Jim Shockey had a home made video of a deer with similiar hooves.

I've got that video. The deer could hardly walk.Yes,It is true!

Tracking him in the snow or mud would be interesting.....You would have to convice your buddy you did not shoot Bozo the clown while folowing the blood trail.

Looks like a founder to me. I've heard it's pretty common in penned deer. It takes a pretty good load of grain. On a side note I had a pony when I was a kid with hooves just like that. His name was Clyde, but I called him "ski".

It's real, I can happen to any kind of hoof aminal. You see it in cattle once in a while and in cattle that are kept on concrete more often. I never seen a deer in the wild with it, but have seen other pictures of them. And Yes this was posted on this site a couple of weeks ago.
