Timber Floor noise

MAN DO WE NEED A GOOD RAIN. Tried my first AM hunt on Sat. morning. Although I was running a little late, I swear every deer within 250 yards could hear me walking. Timber floor is so dry the walk in sounds incredibly loud. My rain gear stinks but I would take 2-3 days of soaking rain right now before this rut kicks off.

If this keeps up, what's the best strategy, getting in EXTRA early. No amount of patience on walks in will compensate for these dry conditions.

Dame we need rain, and I think its coming. I walked into my stand as quietly as I could this morning and I sounded like a bulldozer ramming through.

Yeah, I have started trying to be in my seat at least 1 hour before legal shooting light. This is mostly due to the tinder box that we have to walk on to get to our stands...

we got a little rain last night enough to get the sidewalk wet.... it was still loud lol.. even the squirrel sounded like elephants lol

On permanent stand locations I go in and rake a path after the leaves have fallen.... usually about now is a good time to do it. Of course, some leaves eventually make their way back into the path over time, but it is a VAST improvement over shin deep leaves..... can really make a big difference in getting in and out quietly. Before I started doing it, I was always reserved about scenting the timber up, etc. etc., but I've found that it really doesn't affect the deer at all... have even had scrape lines develop along the paths.

As soon as I hit the woods I try to mix up my steps a little bit. I will take 3 steps pause, take 2, pause, walk 5 pause, then 3 pause and so forth. It is slow going but I don't think they really know what it is when you aren't just plowing through the timber. I only do that when it is really leafy though. If I think I am being quiet I will just walk normal to the tree.

Or, you could just wear ear plugs when walking to the tree. :)

I mix up my pace as well. More than once ive been known to carry an extra thick pair of socks in tote and wear over my normal socks and carry boots on the way in. Sounds worse than it is, actually works pretty well at cutting the noise down in those leafy, dry walk ins...

Super noisy on my walks as well, and even worse every squirrel in the woods sounds like a rhino plowing through the brush and gets me all worked up every time!

At least in the afternoon you can run a mouth turkey call on the way in and the deer would just think it is a flock of turkeys. Those dang things sound like a stampede coming through the woods.

Yes the steady trudging of human pace walk is a dead give away. Deer have an earatic pace. I know I didn't spell that right ,,but you know what I mean. Stepping ,,,then stopping. So you sound more like an animal,,cautious. Hard to do when you just want to get to the darn stand. Pray this incoming front stalls farther north than anticipated. So far this month they have all stalled down in MO. When the fronts stall,,,,,precip breaks out. Only chance there is this week for rain,,,WED..
