tonights hunt

PROBLEM is: the fellas on here are all on the same page- passing shed bucks, not shooting button bucks, etc, etc. You're dealing with a crowd that are NOT regulars on Iowawhitetail.com- they are folks out to "shoot" some stuff and have some "fun".

Slow but steady education will be the only means for these groups of hunters to finally realize the science and management behind what is proven to create a healthy and amazing deer herd. Pretend you were 13 again and think of what needs to be taught to you about what management, QDM, balanced deer herds, top quality hunting and proper hunting techniques entail. We have a slow but effective educational task in front of us.

The fawn comment was in regard to the unborn 3month old fawns inside the does you shoot. Are those a delicacy?
At 300yrds can you tell if you are shooting a shed buck or doe?I seriously doubt it.
Most people don't care about that.If its legal they will shoot it.
The late rifle antless season is all about money. The state don't relly care about the deer herd in Iowa. If it wasn't about money why would they start the rifle season on the 11th of Jan? Because it makes people buy new lisences that wouldn't normally buy one till April or next fall.If it wasn't about money they copuld make last years lisences good till Feb 1st.
2009 deer season was not good for a lot of people.5 more years of the Jan. antlerless season will ruin Iowa deer hunting for good.In 5 years if you don't own a big chunk of land you won't be seeing many deer.

Yes I am talking about the unborn fawns....yes are a delicacy. Not my words, just like they like partially born chickens in the eggs. let them mature in the egg right before they get feathers and then eat. Im not into that but they are. Also a couple does shot off farm I hunt in shotgun season had fawns in them, so do you not shoot does then either?

My question is where do you stop shooting does? Because they could have a fawn inside? After oh around Oct. 15th or when you think the doe has been bred?

And you absolutely can tell, use a spotting scope. I agree if they are on a dead run, nope you cant tell. But eating in a field, you have plenty of time to glass over their head.

Trust me I do care, that is why if I am unsure I dont take the shot.

And I will say it might be about the money, but whether I buy my license on January 11th or April 1st, they still get my $51 for hunting and fishing either way, and my doe tags cost me $2 a piece. Which if they are banking off my $4 then so be it.

I just love how people say their season was crappy, you could be in a place where you couldnt hunt, now that is a crappy season....and yes speaking from experience. My season was shot this year, but it was because I choose to go on the deployment, so please dont say that you had a crappy year hunting, at least you got to enjoy what you love to do when you wanted to do it and see mother nature at its best, because some people in this world dont have a chance to do so. Thank you.

I guess I can assume this is directed at myself so I will respond. I use to frequent this site almost everyday, and have several friends off of here, and even a couple that frequent a beer test every now an then. So saying Im not a regular isnt the case. I brows but hardly post because it seem you arent entitled to your opinion before someone degrades your opinion and yes it is a public site, so you are telling me if I decide to shoot a shed buck, then Im not educated. Hmmmmm. That is quite the comment. Now you feel you need to educate me? Why cant hunting be about enjoying your time with your buddies and yes having "fun" as you put it. And yep "shoot" some stuff. To much in this day in age it is all about the antlers and my bone is bigger then yours instead of enjoying your time in the great outdoors.

And I dont need to be a regular on this site to be educated, there is a lot of great info on this site but so is there on a lot of other sites and in magazines and in videos.

Also been a member since 2003 and a PMA Life Member since the day I signed up and have hosted a few events for this site also, so please dont tell me I dont frequent often, just because I dont post doesnt mean I dont watch and read.

The doe carrying fawns argument is a little ridiculous, IMO!! They're bred, for the most part, in November. Remember....the RUT!! Many does have been carrying for two months now. Why is it okay to continue killing them with our bows, slug-guns, and muzzy's until Jan. 10th, but not okay on the 11th or after? I hunt the January season because bow and muzzleloader I'm seeking a trophy buck. I'll likely eat a tag sandwich this year, but I still had fun even though it was a frustrating year. I enjoy hunting! But I enjoy eating just as much! Therefore, I'll hunt the bonus season to put some meat in the freezer. And I will shoot DOES, and DOES only, which are just as pregnant now as they were during bow, shotgun, and muzzleloader season....

I would bet the State could start a season in May and they would still get people out there killing deer.At some point...enough is enough. To me enough is enough Jan 10th. Everyone has had an opportunity to hunt thier type of season if its bow, muzzle loader or shotgun.

Whether you shoot a doe the 1st of October or the 15th of January, the doe represents three deer next year. Either your ground can handle it or not. Shooting shed bucks is just ignorant and affects neighboring properties as well as your own.

Archery95,

What is your suggestion then to help those areas that have too many does.
How should they help thin them out? There are way too many does in some areas. Thank you for your input.

FWIW- I would be one of those out hunting in May. Why because I love being out there. I probably would not shoot anything but I would be in the outdoors. Good enough for me.
