Too early?

Eh, probably too early. You never know though, you could draw something in that's curious. I don't know how early they start getting territorial up there but when they do that's the time to use the decoy.

I would guess you will get younger bucks in for curiousity and the older ones will be more suspisous.

I'm all over the deke idea. Early season is ignored for this. Big bucks are always interested in "who's in the neighborhood."

Friend of mine (hunting Sask. actually) a few years ago, proved this. He watched a nice buck come out of a boggy creek bottom two nights in a row. No trees for setup on the entry trail, and the buck wandered all over when he hit the field.

So my friend backed off to a corner where he knew he had a true wind. Built a ground blind. Stuck a deke out, facing the entry trail. (He figured the buck would interpret the "stare" of the deke as an aggressive--or at least unintimidated--pose). Anyway, buck came out, fed for a few seconds, spotted the deke and ambled over to 25 yards. He didn't amble away....

Deer are social critters year-round. Unless you feel a buck you're hunting has a wimpy personality and avoids confrontation, I'd stick the Boss in his face!

Makes a lot of sense to me. I have been itching to get a decoy and agree that any time COULD be the right time to have one out.

I think it depends on how many bucks you have living together. a higher buck population will encourage curiousity.

now that the bucks are dropping velvet, they may feel more frisky and willing to show some mild aggression.

i say give it a try.....
