I was reading up on laws about handguns and things, so i know what I am getting into before I buy and I ran across this quote

"you may not have or carry a shotgun or rifle in a vehicle that is on a public highway, unless the firearm is taken down or totally contained in a securely fastened case with its barrels and magazines unloaded."

does this really mean that on gravels that dont need to be cased??

I thought it was always case a firearm, ALWAYS!

Take my word for it, they have to be in a case (or taken down) on ANY public roadway (blacktop, gravel, dirt, no difference)! Public highway is a very generic term.

I get frustrated some times because the regs book sometimes makes things that I have always known to be illegal, Legal.

"Public highway" is any road open to the public and that includes gravel and dirt roads.

So this brings up the question, how about on my own farm? In my truck or on my ATV, does it have to be cased on my private property?

it doesn't have to be broken down on private property. it can even be loaded if you so desire. at least that's the way it was explained to me.

If you have a concealed weapons permit it dosen't need to be in a case.

The highway question has been answered, but in addition to that, when reading regs or Iowa code it helps to have the definitons on hand to reference so you can tell what may or may not be included. "Highway" in the code covers alot more than what we would normally call a highway.

I really don't know the answer, but does a conceled carry permit extend to a loaded shotgun or rifle in a vehicle? I thought with a cc permit you had to specify the firearm and that it pertained to a pistol that could be conceled on the person or in a vehicle. Also I understand that in many Iowa counties the permits are nearly or completely impossible to get.

That's a good point. I was thinking in terms of a handgun in reference to a CCP. I can't be 100% certain, but I can't see a concealed carry permit overriding a regulation that requires a long gun to be unload and broken down/cased. I think that actually falls under "conveyance"(sp?) in the code.

I have a concealed weapons permit and I believe that DNR rules override everything!
Also, Teeroy is correct. Rules do not apply to rifles or shotguns because it cannot be concealed on "your person."
