Trapping update

This thread has gotten more hits than Ray Rices girlfriend

It may be wrong on many levels but I can't stop laughing at that one Murph! :D

Hey Skully. What is a good lure scent for bobcat? Gonna try for one with the kids
I like deer, muskrat, beaver or bobcat meat in my dirt hole sets. Any skunk based call lure will bring in all predators. I happened to use fox urine on my backer last year when I caught my bobcat. I caught her by her back foot and I think she was backing up to the set to spray her scent over the foxes scent. Good luck putting a steel bracelet on a bobcat this year, and make sure to post pics!

Interesting.. I also caught my bobcat last year by the back foot on a coyote set with fox urine on the backer. I guess I never really thought about it backing into the set. I just figured it jumped or climbed over the back of the logs/sticks I had set there. Makes sense though.

Thought some of you might like to see how we get our traps ready for the upcoming season. We start by power washing any mud and grime off of the traps. Then we test set each one and adjust triggers and tweak them to perfection. This is also a good time to check them for tags. In Iowa every trap in your possession MUST BE TAGGED! Even if they are just riding in the back of your truck. They are now ready for a hot lye bath. The lye will clean the traps of any grease and leave them a dull gray color.

Then they get dipped in clean cool water to rinse the lye. Next they go into the dye pot. We use log wood trap dye and black walnut hulls. Cook them in this slurry for a wile, then remove them and hang them up to dry.

Hang them outside where they won't be subject to exhaust fumes, gas etc. Predator traps can be waxed to protect them from rust and make them fire quicker. Hope you are all prepped and ready, it will be here soon! Good luck!!!

Yes, it is strange to catch a predator at a dirt hole set by a rear foot. Most predators will approach a set from down wind, move in cautiously and work it with their front feet. Most animals are territorial and the smell of an inferior animal's urine on THEIR turf can infuriate them. I am guessing she wasn't about to let Mr. fox claim her ridge! :D I will say that a rear foot catch on a bobcat can be interesting for the fact it gives them good reach and both front feet to claw at you with! :)

Hey Skully, do you wax your body grippers? I did several years ago against the advice of another trapper. It pains me greatly to say this but he was right, I didn't like the way they handled. Perhaps with more experience I would have been OK with the wax but they were toooooo slick for me.

I like your boiling set up. Where did you find those cauldrons? I bet they were pretty pricey.

Bonks, waxing any body gripper is a BIG no-no! It is like playing Russian Roulette with your fingers every time. :D A good dye job or even some spray paint will be good enough for connies. If you feel you must wax them you need to clean off the triggers and the area on the jaws where they make contact. You just always have to live on the edge don't you? ! :) The cauldrons belong to a buddy of mine. He said the big one was in someones yard and was in great shape. He just stopped and ask what they would take for it and he got it for $100!! It comes in dang handy for trap boiling.

My two boys set some traps around our place and I threw out some 2-20's in some road ditches on my way to work this week. We are having a little luck.

Maybe...maybe you have really been catching otters all this time. :D

Oh Oh. I better defrost the freezer, wipe it down with bleach to destroy DNA evidence and boil the traps to get all the otter fur off of them. Who knew?

Now I'll be living in fear of a random knock on the door. Not that I don't already, but now it's gonna be worse.

Inspiration

After Bonk's said I was showing off he inspired me. Due to low fur prices I'm offering some home decor or cabin furnishings. Or maybe that special gift for your special one. But wait before the month is over buy now and get two for the price of one.

Ummmmm, ahhhhh, wellllll, gee. I got nuthin.

Close the thread, nuthin more to be added. If this was PMA I'd say move it to the Legends forum.

Goatman: winner winner mouse meat dinner. I tell ya, I feel like I hung a curve and you went all Glennallen Hill on me and hit a roof top across Waveland Avenue.

BTW 75 days till Cubs-Cards.

Some very nice markings on that pelt. Top dollar for sure.

Is that an XXL or just an XL?

PS.. Probably going to get docked for not stripping that tail correctly, and while I am being a jerk, I might as well point out that vermin should be put up on hoops, not boards.

Sorry Skully. Didn't mean to ruin your thread. Bonker speechless? He's finally matured. I'm going home now. Go Cards!
