Long story short, he suffered a rare spinal stroke and after that came down with some sort of blood cancer.

jnrbronc, you are 100% correct. Whether you think he's a little butty upstairs by the way he does things (the hard way, the Barta way), he is without a doubt a genuine outdoorsman.
