I used a doe decoy years back during the rut. Most of the doe hated it and spooked and high tailed it when they got within 50yds. I stopped using it after that and decided I'm gonna throw antlers on it next time I use it.
Just tell me you're not actually going to go buy a fake tree for this purpose.... I can't contribute to your question because I haven't used on but I'll put one out this year. It can't hurt, especially in a large food plot or something
They work in open areas. Deer will go out of their way to pass by the tree and work/check the scrape. There is another thread in the trail cam section titled Mock Rub/Scrape...
Cut a large branch from a maple tree last year. Put it in the ground 30 yards in front of my blind in a large hay field. It looked like a small tree. Within 2 weeks it had been torn apart and rubbed on.
