tree stand stolen

Hi all,

Well I did my homework and put my stands out about 1 month ago and now a thief has taken one of my new ladder stands-it was sitting about 40 yards from a property line along a prime corridor of old rubs coming from a bottleneck. I guess I should have just moved my climber around like last year...I thought I had a nice area to hunt...I'm not going to let this ruin my season---the opener starts Sat. hear in Northwestern PA----and the bucks are really starting to rub some travel routes.

That's really to bad. It's sad that some dumbA$$ stole your stand. I also had one of my stands stolen before, but the kid who stole it went to school with one of my friends. Needless to say, word got back to me who stole it, and I received my treestand back, along with giving the thief a few choice words.

Maggots, wouldn't ya love to catch someone up the tree just unhooking the stand.

I would.

The first day of archery season, last year, I had a lock on stolen. I confronted the only truck, and its occupants, within five miles of my vehicle. Needless to say, after some steel town diplomacy(Pittsburgh), one goofus retrieved my stand from the woods about 20 yards from his truck. I don't really care even if the guy would have used my stand, but stealing is another story.

Here's a good story for this post. What goes around comes around...friend of a friend was doing some glassing one night. He was looking in the direction of where he had a treestand hung. It was a long ways away from where he was. He see's a guy climbing up the tree that held his stand, he unhooks the ratchet strap and pulls the stand down, dumps it in a black plastic garbage bag and bolts out of the area. The owner of the stand is irate and decides to chase after the thieve(s) and loses them in the heat of the moment. He did get a look at the vehicle and the whereabouts they headed. He drove around the location and spotted of all people a police officer. He explained what had happened and they decided to "look in the back of the truck in question" nothing was in there....but on the porch was a black plastic bag which contained the treestand, no ratchet strap. They ended up getting a search warrant (just for the strap) which allowed them to search the trailer....sure enough they found the infamous strap along with a meth lab.

I think if you hunt long enough it happens to everyone. I have a kryptonite cable hooked to every stand I own. They say they can't be cut and so far so good.I'd like to catch one of those pri$#s in the act.

I'm getting closer to the theif-I have questioned all the bordering property owners to see if they seen anyone-and apparently there was some kids on bikes trespassing on a property up the road-the kids seemed pretty nervous when I talked to them about it-but still no stand has shown up. Someone will slip up and I will find the theif.

This year is the first time that I have had a stand come up missing. It was hung only about 100 yards from my house. Looks like it will be me and my lonewolf hunting that spot this year. I was hoping to have my son sit in it while I was in my lonewolf but we will have to save that for another spot.

I love hearing those justice stories. You'd think they'd be a bit more frequent with the popularity of trail cameras.

I've had one stand stolen, have a fair idea of who the culprit was, but no evidence.

A few years back we had some stands stolen and it was a good thing that a cam was out. It had a picture of the stand thiefs riding past with the time stamp on it. Needless to say we got our stands back and justice was served. Their parents claimed that they couldn't have done it but they were still strapped to the 4 wheelers when we got them back thanks to the local sheriff that was with us. With a name engraved in them it wasn't hard to prove that they didn't belong to them.

Although this is no guarantee that I will not have stands stolen, I do use a metal engraver and engrave my last name on each piece, including each section of my ladder sticks.

So if I do have something stolen and I come across it later I have a pretty good chance of "proving" it is mine. The engraving is also not terribly evident to the casual thief, I put the engravings in the same place and then paint over them. You almost have to know they are there to see them.

It also doesn't hurt to make sure the neighbors know there are trail cams out too. Whereas anyone stealing stands would likely take a trail cam that they see too, the notion that they may be unknowingly caught on camera is a deterrent all by itself too.

What is a Kryptonite cable? I just got my first store bought one up this last weekend. Makes me nervous after reading this post. I had a nice one I made in shop class stolen a few years ago. I made it out of Windmill angle iron and was heavier then hell. Sat in it for years. It was nice looking project that I got an "A" on but it was kind of dangerous cuz it was so heavy and didn't like to stay strapped on the tree very well. I was ticked at first when I saw it was missing but then the sinister side of me hoped it came unhooked with him in it and fell and broke his neck!
