treestand heights

Just wondering how high everyone likes to hang there treestands.

15 to 20+ feet. There are many advantages to getting as high as you can. Scent stream, thermo lift, visibility to name a few.

I'm in Vancouver at the moment. If I had trees like this back in Iowa I would hang stands a little higher than my normal 18-20 foot.

I like to be in the 15-20ft range as well. I have several 12ft sticks however and have killed deer out of these stands the last few years but I usually have them on slopes where I am well above 12ft. off the ground. However, I have been in stands that were so high the shot angle was really poor.

My goal is about 20'-22', but depending on the tree I end up between 18' and 25' and I'd rather be 25' than 18'. You can get away with alot if heights dont bother you.

I just place mine however high is the best spot for that specific tree. Sometimes it could be only 15 foot in a tree, sometimes it could be 25+ feet in a tree. Wherever there is the best cover and best shooting, that's where I will be

Ditto on that...

The higher the better for me. One of my hunting buddies videos for me sometimes and he's usually %%$$ing his pants getting up and down but I like to be able to move around a little more.

I do agree sometimes lower can be better in certain circumstances.

To me it depends on the size of the tree. But generaly I like to be 20 ft or a little higher.I am a bigger guy so the higher and bigger around the tree is the better it hides me.

20 ft and above whenever possible, The higher I get, the less I get busted. Heights dont bother me a bit, but finding trees that large arent always that easy in my area.

I choose my stand placement carefully based on the amount of cover mainly but there are tons of other factors. Given ideal situation's I would choose around 18 feet high, but each situation is different. You must also consider trajectory when hunting high. You are much more likly to only get one lung and not recover your deer. One lung Bad

I put mine around 20ft. Kinda depends where the trails are or the hill slope. Have some 12ft that over look ditches.

Like Ol' Danny Boy had to say, it just depends. I've hunted as low as 8 ft. in a friggen bush, and up to 35' in the air to get up high enough to overlook an adjacent ridge. Just depends on the situation. I've been hunting lower in the past few years as it's just more fun and you don't have to trim as much. 3 sticks baby!

15-20ish or so, how can anyone sit in those high ones? lol....in the 20 feeter we have, im like shocked, it seems really high up there, but its not.

I have a back that is fused. So I am very fearful of falling. I have permenent ladder stands I feel safe in from 14 to 16 ft. I have no problem being seen, but sometimes wonder if deer have a sense of my presense that low? Everyone you read says 20 ft. I'll never be that high. Does it take higher to get the older bucks?

We put our stands 15'-20'. We used to have one that was 28' tall but it got hit by lightning. The higher your stand it really helps with scent. I also use a lot of ladder stands in the 15'-18' range and haven't been seen. The 140-150 class deer I shot last fall I was about 12' off of the ground.

For myself it depends on the terrain I am hunting. Each situation will require different requirements. I've hunted 8 ft off the ground in one spot with success, and I've hunted in one location in Wisconsin where I needed to tie TWO 20ft bow ropes together just so I could get my bow up into the tree stand. Main thing is to watch scent control, hunt the wind, and limit movement! I've hunted 25-30 feet up, and if you are in the wrong spot at the wrong time, deer can peg you like you have strobe lights attached to your hat! I've experienced the exact opposite hunting 8 ft off the ground... deer walk right under without a hint that I am there... I guess what I am trying to say is that I don't think I need to be 20 ft up everytime I hunt... depends on where I can hide in the tree... if good limbs are in the tree I choose at 12ft, I go 12 feet... if they are 28', I go 28 feet...

Regardless of what height you hunt... just be sure to where a safety restraints!

Since there has been some discussion recently about tree stand height this maybe an interesting poll. Check out the Entrance Page .
