I've used EZY rod steps for close to 20 years and never had one pull out or break. I also know a person who's used the folding EZY's for more years than that without any complaints. I believe they are the best made. Can't comment on the model you are now looking at though.
As far as steps pulling out.
EZY makes a larger step with longer screws for thick barks like cottonwood.
When I set screw in tree steps I just use a small knife or hatchet to thin the bark down.

The only difference is the collar that stops the tread advance into the wood at the right depth. The one I have the that part is just machined into the bit and it is very narrow and pivots to easily at the pin holding the bit. My overall bit length is close to an inch shorter than the one you're showing.

The collar has a spring in it... so you grab it with one hand and press it toward the tree... as you crank with the other hand the tension from the spring causes the bit to dig into the bark and allows you to guide the angle of the hole being drilled. I can see from the pictures Rudd posted why you would not like it. It looks like it would be very tricky to hold and drill. I can drill a hole with this bit in around 15 seconds. I just sure hope I never break mine, or they come out with something better if I do... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif
