I've used EZY rod steps for close to 20 years and never had one pull out or break. I also know a person who's used the folding EZY's for more years than that without any complaints. I believe they are the best made. Can't comment on the model you are now looking at though.
As far as steps pulling out.
EZY makes a larger step with longer screws for thick barks like cottonwood.
When I set screw in tree steps I just use a small knife or hatchet to thin the bark down.
