After his sister shot her first deer during the youth season, Trenton was ready attempt to harvest his 1st deer. He is only six years old but he proved to me this spring, when he was still 5, that he was ready by harvesting his first turkey. Trent and I hunted out of a Double Bull blind on four different occasions but could not get a deer to within his limited range. Then we got caught in a major lightning storm and had to run out of the woods. He was scared to death and decided he wasn't hunting again until the storm season was over.
On 12-29-07 we set up the Double Bull in a brushy fence row. It had snowed the day before and based on the fresh tracks it was obvious that the deer were tearing up the alfalfa in front of us. I turned on the heater at 3:30 p.m. Trent was engrosed in his gameboy at 4:00 when the first deer stepped out. More followed and eventually we had 7 does in the field. The back ones were the biggest but too far for a shot. When the lead doe got to 50 yards I gave Trent the go ahead. He stayed calm and dropped the doe in her tracks!!!
To say he was exited would be an understatement. Tears of joy flowed like I have never seen. I had the video camera and tripod there to video the experience but the camera chose a heck of a time to poop out.......no video!
He is an excited 6 year old!
For those who may be wondering, he was shooting a Rossi youth .45 cal muzzleloader with a red dot scope, 50 grains of Triple 7 and a TC Super 45 XR 180 gr sabot.
