Turkey guns

Thought this forum needed a jump start, so ....

if you were in the market for a new turkey gun for this spring, what would it be?

I'm pretty close to buying a Remington 870 Express Synthetic Super 3.5" magnum 12 gauge, 23" barrel with turkey X-full choke. I'm a long-time 870 shooter and figured I'd get an extra barrel (28" VR) to go along with it to make it a two-season gun.

heh... I don't know if I could ever use anything other than my old H&R break action, single shot, 10 gauge. I absolutely LOVE that gun.

I've wanted a nice Benelli for awhile now so I guess IF I had the $$$ I'd go with one of them.

Although I only bow hunt them now, I've flopped a bunch of um' with the ol 870 Wingmaster Mag. I won a Mossberg camo NWTF 3-1/2" last year at a NWTF banquet that I have yet to shoot.

But, If I had to go buy a new turkey gun it would be the Benelli Super Eagle II just because it's so damn light weight and easy handling.

Bow = Sit in Double Bull!

Gun = On the move! (run and gun!)

The gun I use is a Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag - one of the original laminate wooden stock guns. I won it at a DU banquet in 1991. I used to use it duck and goose hunting - used it for a boat paddle, hammer - you name it. But about 8 years ago I purchased a Kick's Gobbling Thunder custom choke tube for this gun and since then I've retired it to turkey hunting only. Sounds like a bucket of bolts carrying it around, but the pattern it produces with that tube and Winchester Supreme 2 ounce # 6's in phenominal. Only gun I've ever used to harvest a turkey - several other folks have shot turkeys with it as well.

I think all the new magnums are pretty wel the same - it's just a matter of prefernece towards a certain make or model. I've always had an 870 and have always been partial to a pump and if I was going to buy a new gun today it would defenitely be a synthetic SP 870 in a 3.5" magnum. Which brand of custom choke is something I'd have to look long at hard at as I think that makes all the difference in the world.

BTW - you don't have to get me jumpstarted on turkeys - it's all I've thought about since season closed this past spring

I've got a gas operated auto- Winchester Super X2. Even with 3&1/2 shells the recoil isn't bad but since you only shoot a couple shells each spring that isn't a big deal. If I needed a two season gun for ducks and geese with big shells- I'd seriously think about a heavy gas operated gun. Once you put a sling on it the extra pound doesn't mean much.

I just talked my youngest boy into a 870 with a 26" barrel. I am not sure if he'll shoot a regular full choke or buy a extra full of some kind. I've switched to bow hunting em, but always did fine in the past with just 3" 4 shots and a full choke in my old 870.

...right now I use a 3 1/2" 870 Rem that I won through some NWTF raffle my father entered me into...I think it has a 24" barrel and a Rem Turkey tube...it more than does the job - though I only use 3" shells through it...

...I also have to agree with Muddy that my old college turkey gun -a NEF 10ga. with 24" barrel was an impressive turkey-taker...when the hammer fell so did tom!...I still have it and don't forsee myself ever getting rid of it...

...as for a new gun...I would like to try one of the semi-auto models with the full-pistol style grips...it wouldn't be an all around gun but it would be easier to hold up for longer periods of time...I know benelli makes one, though I would prefer a beretta...

Right now I use a 870 3.5 mossy oak synthetic stock with a 26 inch barrel and a undertaker turkey choke. It does the job very well. I've used many different guns for turkey hunting including an old side by side 10 guage with double triggers and 30 inch full barrels, the gun was about 20 pounds but smoked a few gobblers. I carried that thing around all spring until I realized my 12 guage produced patterns that don't even compare to the ten guage, they are alot tighter and the gun weighs about 5 times as less

My dream gun im gonna have someday is an over and under 12 guage with 3.5 inch screw in chokes, for some reason I like those over and unders

Don't use it any more but for turkeys only wouldn't use anything else than the Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag with a Kicks choke and Winchester 3.5, #6, I would probably try the hevi shot if I went back to a gun.

For all around gun I love my Benelli SBE.

my current gun is a mossberg 500, 12 guage, with the ducks unlimited logo stamped in the reciever (from a DU banquet). with a x-tra full turkey choke. i shoot 3" turkey loads.
i picked up an undertaker choke tube, and my spring for the bucks to get hevi-shot.

if i were in the market, i would probably get the stoeger 2000, camo combo with both barrels

I use a Knight TK 2000. This muzzleloader will knock-m-down at 50 yards. If you want a good turkey gun and somkething fun to shoot, try a muzzleloader. I have shot turkeys with shotguns and then changed to a bow for several years but still wanted something different. The TK 2000 from knight was just the ticket. I had a ball with it last year which was the first season I used it..I can'nt tell you why it's just different.
