Turkey Jerky

Not sure if anyone has tried making turkey Jerky before but I highly reccommend it. I usually have a left over breast or two come fall and I finally figured out what to do with them, I just can only eat wild turkey so many times and so many different ways since I am the only one that will eat it in my house. Anyhow, I used the Hi Mountain Cracked Black Pepper jerky kit and made some turkey jerky on the dehydrator, and I must admit it is excellent. If you some extra birds after turkey season I hightly reccommend it.

I've boned out the thighs and legs a couple of times, ground that and made jerky (jerky gun) and it turned out pretty good as well. Used Nesco Cajun Spice. Since it's dark meat, it didn't look that different than beef or venison jerky.

Anybody ever had goose jerky? Made it this year for the first time and was a big hit! I'll have to try turkey jerky this spring...hopefully!

Jarin said it smelled like ass last night, now he's singing the praises.

Betcha yer glad you listened to me now J! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Pretty sure I could have put cracked black pepper on a j-turd and it would taste decent.

Jerin... It's really hard to beat!

I always turn all our birds into black pepper jerky. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Ghost, you can bet your last 6 busch lights that is all we're going to be doing as well. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Ghost,

I agree that is where the rest of my birds are going from now on. I don't mind about 1 turkey breast a year grilled or made into turkey nuggets in a fryer but it gets pretty dry in a roasting bag, although I did find one receipe that I really like with morels, apples, celery, red onion in a roasting bag. The vegetables left plenty of juice behind.

Anyhow, the Jerky is awesome, wish I would have known about this earlier.

i know that the jerky shoppe, the vendor that is at the classic, sells their turkey jerky seasoning on their website. been meaning to give it a shot sometime. between the IW booth, and the jerky booth, its quite a race to see who gets the most of my cash.

I've got a batch on now. Does the turkey take less drying time than deer/beef? I assume it does. What temp./ time do you find works best??
