Turkey population…

Atleast bobcats don't kill turkeys! Not my trail cam video but the camera is 500 yards from one of the turkey spots i get to hunt & is recent. Not sure how the cat got the turkey, you can draw your own conclusions. I'll attach some video captures in case the video doesn't work.

Ha! I have had multiple conversations with multiple Iowa DNR personnel over the years about whether or not bobcats will kill turkeys and my position is that "a cat will absolutely kill a bird" if it can. To a person the DNR personnel have maintained that bobcats do not kill any appreciable number of turkeys. I know that when our turkey population began to nosedive 10'ish years ago it correlated exactly with the increase in cat #'s AND in those days we somewhat commonly found dead, adult turkey carcasses, with several of them being partially covered.

It is certainly possible that something else killed the turks and then the bobs cleaned up on free turkey meat. But it sure seems like a significant factor in the turkey population decline is due to the rise of the cat population.

I saw a stray cat take out a full grown rooster pheasant today while I was spraying switch. The bird was dead before I could get off the tractor and i was close when it happened. I bet they weighed about the same. If he could take down a pheasant, I'm sure a bobcat will take a turkey.
