Turn Around Time

I thought it might be interesting to find out what the average turn around time to get your mount back from your taxidermist is?

I took mine in Oct 19 and he said I was his first mount of the year. He told me a little over 1 month and I'd have it back. It's now been over 9 months and no call from him yet. If he wouldn't have told me 1 month I wouldn't even care, but now it really bugs me. When should I call and ask what's up?

About 7 months ago! I would call him today!! maybe he's had it done for 6 months and lost your contact info.

ya i would have called months ago i always call and check on my mounts if they give you a date it should be done on that date

If your getting it back in 1-3 months you need to find a better taxidermist. Otherwise don't look for it to last very many years before it starts to fall apart.

3 month turn around time isn't tough to get, especially if you're good friends with your taxi and he bumps you to the front of the list so he can get his work into the Iowawhitetail booth at the classic for some advertising! :) Thanks again stuffy!

in reality if a Taxi isnt backed up, he can get a mount done in a week or two.....

but thats without another job and other mounts to worry about.

i had a buddy do my last one, it took him 5 days start to finish once he got the manakin in.

it finished up drying on my wall
and id put his work up against just about anyone. definately quality!
:)

You need to let them dry for at least a month to two months, before you do any finishing work. Look around your eyes, nose and lips for cracks. (give it a year and you will) I was just giving these guys some tips to look out for, if your going to mount something may as well have it done right so it last a lifetime.

Since I dont flesh and tan the hides myself, it takes at least 2 or 3 months for me to get mounts done. I send them to a quality tannery.. From my experience, the hides from the tannery are usually pretty damn good when they come back. They smell great, and the tumbler they put them through makes them really soft. A couple things bad about a tannery though is sometimes, the hide can come back with a few little extra nicks and dings in it.. Nothing that some sewing and Apoxie Sculpt cant fix. Also, the turn around time is longer. It takes like 2-3 months just to get the hide back from them. After that, I have to do a little more detailed fleshing and then I can mount. I usually always let the mounts dry for at least a week b4 I do finish work, just to make sure nothing pulls, or cracks... I think about the worst thing that could happen is the tear ducts pulling out because there is a lot of stress on that area when the whole face starts drying and shrinking.

I HAVE GONE TO THE SAME GUY FOR 5 YEARS NOW,HE'S LOCAL TAXI AND DOES A AWESOME JOB RIGHT DOWN TO THE DETAILS, ALSO DOES WORK FOR SOME WELL KNOWN HUNTERS,HE USALLY TELLS ME 1 YEAR AND THAT IS ABOUT WHEN I GET IT BACK.

I have always gotten my mounts back in 6-9 months. I think this is a very fair time frame and I know that my taxi takes in a ton of work so I don't bust his chops about having an exact date. I am not sure about the drying time before adding finishing touches as I am not a taxidermists but I have heard several times that 4-6 weeks is pretty standard to ensure cracking doesn't occur in the eyes and nose.
