Twenty minutes in the woods...

Yesterday I decided to rehang my trailcam after I pulled it a few months ago. I was in the woods for no more than 20 minutes. I approached my salt block I had sitting out where I had previously hung my camera. I got within about 5 feet of it and a squirrel exploded from the backside of the block. I was kinda of startled because from my vantage point, I couldn't see anything around the salt block, nor was I really looking for a squirrel. After the moment of excitement, I resumed hanging my camera. I was fiddling with the strap that runs around te tree when I hear a crash of brush and sticks. Not 25 feet away a buck and a smaller deer come rumbling through. I caught only about 3 seconds of vision before they disappeared back behind some trees. I don't know really where they came from, because they weren't on the trail and it is kind of dense where there is no trail. The buck looked like he could be a potential shooter come winter. He looked like he could be outside the ears and he had a decent base, but the velvet could have fooled me a bit. It will be interesting to see if I get him on trailcam pics. The funny thing is that it was about 2:00 in the afternoon. So after that fun, I finally get my camera set and begin walking back to the truck. I am leaving on the same path I came in on, which is kind of overgrown with some kind of prickly plant. I wasn't really paying much attention when I see this dead turkey at my feet. I hadn't seen it on the way in somehow, but then the turkey moved its head. It was in fact, not dead but very much alive. I could have literally stepped on this bird. In the split second it took for me to realize this bird was alive, it flapped its wings and took off to the other side of the creek. The bird was a greyish brown. I'm not much familiar with turkeys. Is this turkey a tom or a hen do you think? Whatever it was, it was big and sounded sweet when it took off from a foot away. This small taste of the outdoors momentarily quenched my thirst, but it has already worn off, and this all happened yesterday.

Did you have to change your pants after coming up on that turkey?

What color was the turkey's head?
Greyish blue usually means a hen.....any hint of red usually means a jake or tom. Of course a beard swinging usually means a tom, too

The darker the plumage, the more likely the turkey is male, as well.
You probably walked up on a hen...did you see a nest anywhere?

I was kind of in a hurry so I didn't stop and look around for anything. It all happened so quick and I was pretty startled. My little brother and sister were with me too, and I wanted to make sure they saw the bird. All in all, very neat.

Ha Ha. Good story Landon. That would have been a bad day for that turkey if it met your boot. Email any good trail cam pics you get. I need to scratch that itch from 1800 miles away.
