TYM 55HP Tractor and PH Outdoors 5' drill

If these questions have been asked before, I apologize,

I'm looking at tractors. My 37HP JD 4300 is a sweet little acreage tractor and it's been a little beast of a food plot machine, but I'm becoming a bit of a sissy in my old age and I think I need a cab.

Been looking at the TYM brand. Done a fair amount of research...I'm at the point where I'm trying to find someone that is really out on the brand. Most reviews I can find are overwhelmingly positive. Does anyone here own one, or have first hand experience with one and have anything positive or negative to say? I've been looking at tractors in their 55HP lineup, They have a few different configurations, which brings me to my next question...

I'm also looking at the PH Outdoors 5' drill with large & small seed boxes - will also add the native seed box that just became available. Most of their 55's have a 3000lb +/- hitch lift capacity at 24" - is that enough for that drill when it's full of seed?

Also, I have seen some other threads/posts of guys sharing their thoughts on the Genesis/PH drills. According to Paul Hollis, There have been some pretty significant improvements in the PH vs The Genesis. If you own one or the other, if you could share thoughts/opinions, id sure appreciate it.

Thank you kindly and Merry Christmas!

Are you sure you can have the native box AND the small seed box? Pics I've seen they occupy the same space.

I run the G5 lite on 48HP 4320 no problem. Full its like 2200 or 2300 lbs. No tills fine.

Small seed over a native box if u have to choose between the 2. One reason I like Great Plains- all 3 boxes.
That should be a sweet set up!!!

You’re correct, it’s one or the other, not both. Dang.

Skip, why do you say that? I’ve had a lot of times over the last 15 years or so that I wished I had the ability to plant fluffy/bearded seed with no way to do it other than asking a friend to use their equipment. I just hate hate borrowing stuff.

I one hundred percent agree with the small box over the native box (its probably a 10 to 1 or even 20 to 1 use of small box to native) And if I only Had one drill I would definitely go with the g.P And get all three boxes , so not limited.

It seems to me you spend seventy five percent on comparable's that don't quite compare.....

Also have first hand experience And a lot of buddies that do as well with the GP and no regrets that I have ever heard.

It seems you probably know what you should do.

If you are diligent and spend a bit of time looking you can usually find these 2nd hand for a good deal....

Same goes for the tractor. Whatever you get will eventually break and it won't happen at a convenient time. I'd suggest get something with parts available and relatively common so you can gets parts ASAP or a confident mechanic when needed.

Just my opinion. I understand this stuff is expensive! But it holds its value and your time is spent working not struggling....

I respect above opinions, but I disagree. :) I'd go native box over small seed box.

The PH/RTP plants small seed so precisely out of the main box the ONLY reason you would need a small seed box is to plant large and small seed at the same time. If that applies to your operation, then by all means small seed box would be way to go. I nearly never plant large seed and small seed separately at the same time. The only application it applies to is fall planting rye with clover (For me) and there are super easy ways to handle that scenario. Blends can just be planted out of main box at whatever rate you choose.

I agree, GP is an overall better drill, especially with 3 seed boxes. The ONE thing PH/RTP for sure has GP smoked on is calibration. You can literally change seed rates by fractions of ounces if you want and it takes seconds to do it. Small seed planted perfectly out of main box: clover, alfalfa, brassicas, switchgrass, etc.

I've had a 30hp TYM for many years now. Getting close to 2,000 hrs. and did have to replace the axel seals and the clutch assembly once. I had no problems getting parts and found a local guy that worked on tractors that did the work which I was very pleased with. The only thing I don't like about it is the tires suck in the snow, needs wheel weights and weight on the hitch. The tires on it have a very wide tread, most I've seen have a tread like most farm tractors so that is something to consider. They engine is made by Kabota.

Where are you guys seeing the native grass add on box for the Genesis drills? I don't see anything on either the Genesis or PH outdoors site for the native boxes. I am intrigued by this depending on the cost.

There was an announcement on their social media accounts. If you have FB go to PH outdoor page.

I bought a used great plains drill a couple years ago and love it. I think you will like the PH outdoors drill too. I've done soybeans, cereal grains, clover, alfalfa and brassica with mine and had good results. I do not have the native seed box, just the small and regular boxes. One feature I really like when planting cereal grain is to put brassica in the small box and plant both at the same time. I have a Kubota 63 hp and it pulls the drill fine, but I will say the drill is heavy!

Pretty good video here from Bill Winke, been a few days since I watched it but I think he talks about the small and large boxes
