I've done the Cedar Falls/Waterloo urban hunt for a few years. What you lookin' to find out? I know for that hunt we had to take a bowhunter ed. class and the one for this year is coming up soon. Can't miss it if you want to hunt it! I can say this hunt isn't as easy as some may think...those deer figure it out real quick! But that first week is a good chance to put some meat in the freezer and help out with the pop.
My dad has been doing the urban hunt in Jester Park for close to eight years i think. This will be my forth year in Jester and my brothers second. We enjoy it because its close to home so we dont have to drive an hour away for a nice hunt. We are thinking about doing Saylorville as well this year.
I was running at metro ice last night. I wish I could have seen into that field behind wynnsong to get a look at those bucks. I think there are usually a lot of deer in that field every night.
I have seen 50 deer in that field before. I have pulled many a deer of the road on NW 54th and 72nd. Last fall I helped drag a nice buck off the road that got hit chasing a doe right at the drive for the baseball fields. Even had a neighbor get knocked off his bike by a deer at the bend of 54th and 72nd.
Maybe you should do the urban hunt in Johnston then, sounds like you know where some good spots are! :way: Im too young to do the Johnston hunt, im pretty sure you have to be at least 18.
I keep thinking about it, just need to find the time. I have a homeowner that wants me to hunt his place, just don't know if it will work with the limits that the city puts on you.
I would like to try to get on some of Pioneers ground or Camp Dodge.
I would think that you and your brother could do some damage in your backyard, or is that part of the city limits?
We are inside the city limits also. But I know the polk county deer task force is trying to get some of the distances changed in Johnston, this would allow you to be able to hunt in his yard.
Oh man, if you could get on either Pioneer or Camp Dodge that would be crazy! I have seen some NICE deer on both of those. In fact about two weeks ago I was driving on 70th at night and just flipped my brights on and there was a BIG buck right on the other side of the fence.
I always see them from Meredith and 72nd, up 54th all the way to 86th, the on 70th highway 44 to 141. Just turned in the application for Saylorville just waitong on Johnston to send me the app. Then I will find out what areas are avaible. I usually see them early in the morning going to work or coming home. Plus last year we had a deer on the north side of the building that I had to take care of.
Ya, I knew Pioneer only allowed its employees. We have a guy at our church that is lucky enough to be able to hunt in there. But Johnston is trying to get some more places open for the future...
With me contacting City of Jonston and Corps of Engineers that covered alot of the area. Didn't know you have to contact the Johnston Police if you get a deer, just learned something new.
