use your range finders

I don't reply or make many posts but I am on this site everyday. You guys have some great input. My litte piece of advice is to use your rangefinders. Tonight I missed my first deer. This is a deer I have seen 3 times this year while in my stand but always has been 60 yards or better. Tonight I moved to the edge of the field where he has been coming out and sat in a brush pile. Usually I have the trees around my stand located with yardage markers. Having a deer come out with a wide open field behind him sure throws off your jugement. I was to lazy to take my rangefinder out of my bag. I took a 40 yard shot and watched my arrow fly right over his back and watched him trot off. It was actually 30 yards. I don't think he was to spooked because the does around him just kept eating until I started to kick every piece of brush in the timber. My wife did not understand why i did not use the rangefinder that i needed to buy so i knew my yardage

Mine used to sit in my backpack. There have been many occasions where I couldn't get to it w/o the risk of spooking deer. For the last 3 weeks it is clipped on to the front of my vest and ready at a seconds notice with very little movement at all.

Thanks for the tip.

Be careful clipping it to the front of your vest. Bow strings have a way of snagging anything on the front side.

A couple years ago I grunted at a buck and he was coming in, I drew, shot and all hell broke loose. My neck jerked forward, my bow limb hit a branch and something went flying and landed 10 yards in front of me. My arrow landed at his feet.

The buck ran off but wanted to come back and I reached for my call, it was gone.

The bow string caught the call, that jerked my neck, I dropped my arm and hit the limb and my broadhead almost clipped his hoof nails.

I know guys who have ripped flaps off shirt pockets, buttons, etc. Don't hang anything in front of your clothing.

It is a very good idea to check your range finders case to see if it latched before you get out of your tree and walk back to your truck, so you dont lose them!!
