Was out "working" on the Des Moines River down by Keosauqua a few days ago. A big walleye rolled up and I naturally netted it and threw it in the live tank. When I pulled it out of the tank we noticed this 10 INCH flathead stuck in its mouth, tail first! That is pretty crazy. What is crazier is that it was still alive and swam off! The walleye was pretty emaciated and my guess is that the flathead had been stuck in there with it's fins up for at least a week or so. As you can see the skin is all gone and a lot of the muscle had been digested as well. The tail was almost gone also. Pretty cool stuff. The walleye measured 24 inches. I hope the walleye remembers one thing when eating the rest of his meals... head first causes a lot less problems!!

WOW. Thanks for posting that Muddy. 2 years ago during snagging season the Asian carp were STACKED up around there. Every cast you would hit one. This year there was 0 pulled out from Keosaqua to Bonaparte that i heard about. Not sure if it was the low water or what?

However this year was the best for snagging big spoonbill. But it didnt even last a full day. There was a 12 hour span in mid March where the big males came up to Bonaparte. They were there all night then left. Biggest was 72 pounds. Lots over 50. All males. The females never did make it up this year.

Question

I drive over the Des Moines River upstream from Keosauqua at Selma to get to my farm and I have wondered what the fishing is like in that area. There are some ramps available in Selma and Douds, but I never really see too many boats out. It seems like a pretty straight and rocky stretch, is there good fishing in this area?

Is that walleye a rare find or somewhat common?

Daver I havent heard of many Walleye being caught that far down south. But up around Des Moines is walleye central.
