Vetran blind hunter tactics

[ QUOTE ]
Good Lord guys don't change your plans... You never know what these birds are going to do. Go with your gut, then modify your plan once you see what happens. The first day of the season you may get away with things you wouldn't mid to late... Give er a whirl.

You wouldn't have said that had you been in the blind with me in Nebraska...

My advise is to not use decoys unless you are wanting to film your hunt and wanting the extra show that a decoy may provide for you. Decoys will hurt a hunter way more than they help IMO.

I have done this gun hunting and had it work. Will they still come close enough for a archery shot by coming to the sound of the call only? I would have figured that they needed a visual to draw them in. I suppose it would have to depend on how pressured the birds are.

[/ QUOTE ]Yes, they usually come right on in and try to find the hen that was making the call(you). They don't usually hang up because there is no visual such as a decoy for them to look at. Remember, when a Tom Gobbles, a hen is suppossed to go to him, not him go to her. Last friday we were in the woods and it was about 10:00 am. A tom was gobbling about 200 yds away on another flat. We watched 3 hens come down a path and head right up after him. They were 150 yds away from him but they sure seemed to be on a mission to find him. I am talking about hunting in the timber and not a wide open pasture.

I agree 100% every time i set the decs out where the birds could see them from the roost they pitched off and went the other way. When I didnt have the decs out the birds nearly always pitch down all around the blind.

Great discussion guys, the only time i've seen a bird fly down to dekes was with a jake decoy.
