Vizsla or Weimeriner...

Will never own any other type of dog...

Well, I've hunted behind shorthairs (too hardheaded), brits (to hyper), english setters (too stupid), labs (just was a bad experience), and vizslas. From my personal experience I'll never hunt behind anything but a vizsla, that's my decision, thanks for the opinions but my mind is made up.

That being said, thanks to those that sent me PM's and voice mails, gunna start checking the DM Register now. Thanks again.

I know a few guys that have had vizslas and they were good dogs just a little more hyper than other breeds. So I think they are great dogs. Just to give my vote on a sporting dog mine would be

I'm not saying I wouldn't hunt behind any other breed because I've hunted behind just about every breed out there. If the handler has trained it the right way, all are good breeds.
Muddy, I'm a member of the cetral iowa gun dog club, I can check with a few people there and see if they know of a good vizsla breeder?

EXACTLY!

If anyone wants to prove how great their dogs are I am more than willing to come pheasant hunting with each and every one of you this fall to hopefully train my new "kid".

Muddy, if your mind is made up on a vizsla go for it. If your going to try to get one from a classified ad be sure to ask if it comes from hunting stock as vizslas (and weims) are quite popular with non-hunters. I've hunted over alot of breeds and they will all get the job done with proper training and bird experience.

Thanks, timekiller, for bringing up a pet peeve of mine. Whenever a breed gets popular, there are those who cash in with questionable matings. Weims are extremely popular right now. This erodes years of selective breeding, IMO. Almost makes me want to join NAVHDA (or at least buy NAVHDA pups).

Another blight on bird dogs (again IMO) is field trial breeding. What pheasant hunter wants a dog that you need a horse to keep up with?

I've hunted behind labs, chessies, Irish setters, Cocker spaniels, Brittanys, Weimraners (my best friends family has had them for 30+ years), our current German Shepard (don't laugh, she does better than some of the "hunting" breeds) and a few mutts. I raised and trained GSP's for 10 years. THE best dog I have ever owned or hunted behind was a Vizsla. A friend's cross bred GSP/English Pointer is most likely second. Weims, due to their hard-headedness, don't even make my list.

The best dogs I've ever hunted behind were gsp. But they were someone else's. I don't have the patience for them. In my opinion they take more work because they want to hunt so bad that it is hard to hold them back. Any dog is a good dog its all in how you train it. I stick with labs, easy to train and great family dogs. But it is a great fealing walking up to flush a bird on point of any breed.

Here is who I was referred to if you are looking for a Vizsla:
