Wasp/hornet nests

I have a quick question, I have a couple of the hanging wasp nests spotted in the woods and was wondering if anyone knows when they vacate for the year. Is it dependant on the cold weather? I don't wanna thaw out the little devils in my living room when I bring the nests in. Thanks and good hunting.

They don't all leave, there will b some in there no matter what but they will b slow enough now that you could out run them pretty easy.... But yank'em down!

I got one last year in mid October and I thought they would be dead, but found out diffrent. I climbed the tree took it down then came down and through it in the back seat of my truck. I then got home and left it on the table and started out the door to class when I realized that maybe I should put it in a bag. Half way through class I get a call and the message said that there were some live ones in there flying around. This was after two good freezes.

I have a fairly large collection of paper hornet nests and from my experience, cool October mornings work ok for taking them down but either put it in a garbage bag with a squirt of insecticide or bag it and put it in a deep freeze for a couple days. As the temps rise the hornets become more active and can be really aggressive. I have heard that the main breeders go underground for the winter leaving the "soldiers" behind to die from the cold. I found three nests friday that were already destroyed by the recent wind and moisture.
