Weekend Reports

THA4

A Few Steps Ahead Of You
well, this weekend was horrible for me, the high winds and warm temps seemed to surpress most of the movement.

hope i wasnt alone is sucking it up this weekend

what did you see????

zero - mainly just going in cold into some spots I always wanted to look over and staying out of my better locations for primetime.

I sat from dark to dark on saturday and saw some does. That heat really sucked. Should get good with the cooldown this week.

Since I missed out on the early muzzy licence, My daughter and I have been going out every night in the truck and counting deer from the road. Hey, shes 6 and its a good math exercise.

Wednesday Night we counted 25 in one hay field.

Friday Night, 15 same hay field.

Saturday Night, 10 same hay field.

Sunday Night, 11 same hay field.

Talked to a couple of hunters and they were'nt seeing anything where they were at.

Filled an antlerless MZ tag Saturday morning and filled an antlerless bow tag Saturday night.

I noticed does are driving their fawns off, bucks are moving during daylight hours and their necks are swelling up, and saw 6 deer feeding in a soybean field at sunset Saturday night (the beans have lost leaves and are almost ready to combine).

I didn't hunt Sunday.

Still saw a few deer this weekend, not as many as I usually see.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that the doe's have ran their fawns off. I've seen a ton of fawns by theirselves, and about every doe I see is with another mature doe, or by theirself.

I saw 6 crows, 2 sparrows and some little bugs.

One time I thought I saw a deer then realized I dozed off for a few minutes.

They're pounding the pee out of the apple trees here in NE IA. Covered up with 3-1/2 and younger all weekend AM and PM. They started showin up around 3 PM and just kept coming ---it sucks to have to sneak out on a dozen pre-rutty deer. 3 different 140ish bucks on Sat. PM.Can't wait for the big boys to crawl out of the woodwork.

Pretty slow up here as well...just too warm. Tried to fill an early muzzleloader depredation tag and, of course, the only thing within range was a dandy 10 point Saturday morning. It was like he knew I only had an anterless tag... Partners filled a couple of doe tags, but other than that, the only thing we saw a lot of was lady bugs :-(

One of the slowest Saturdays and Sundays I've seen in a long time.

too warm, breezy, just a dull weekend

Good ones to come though!

Saturday morning I saw nothing but Suzies and yearlings. All but one doe I saw still had fawns tagging along. One thing I thought was strange was one HUGE old doe with three yearling ANTLERED bucks! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif Is that even possible? They were each tiny six point frames and one still had visible grayish dots near his spine. They all hung out as a family group and were all similar in shape. Triplet bucks have to be rare.
Sunday evening I was set up in a tree watching does feed out into the field when I heard something behind me. It was 6:40 PM and a nice 150ish buck was slipping by in the creek bottom behind a doe. Before I could get into position he was over the fence and a$$ deep in the standing corn! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif I am hoping he is on a pattern and will give me another chance later this week. The forecast is looking better at least. Go get em' boys! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

Skully, if that one old doe has three 1.5 year old bucks with her you'd better whack her and stack her just so they hang out on your ground.

Hunted this morning. Saw zero deer and lots of tree rats making noise everywhere. It was 65 degrees when I got into the stand, but the rain drove me outta the woods and after this pushes through and cools off, they should start moving like crazy.

Good luck!

Good advice Muddy. I never thought of it that way. I was thinking what awesome buck throwing genes she must have but if she runs them off the property it defeats the purpose. She will be tough as shoe leather but might be a good candidate for HUSH and the big-ma-ma contest! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

You better let Zack smoke her you mite get doe fever and wing her. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Hunted Saturday morning, Sunday morning, & Sunday evening.

Saw 6 does Saturday morning but they were not close enough for a shot. About 9 AM Saturday morning I was nodding off a little and got surprised by a nice 10 point running over the hill right toward me. He jumped the fence about 5 yards from me and ran into the timber. It happened so fast I could not have gotten a shot and I don't think I could have stopped him. I was surprised to see him at that time of day but he did not see me so it's good to know he will be around.

Saw a few does Sunday morning but again all out of range.

Sunday afternoon saw 8 does and 2 forky bucks. Had 3 does, mama and 2 yearlings, come right in front at last shooting light. I decided to let them pass since it was late and I didn't want to do all that work in the dark.

JNRBRONC - was that your shot I heard Saturday morning?

Can't wait for some cold weather, it was way to hot out there.

If it was the first legal minute of shooting light, odds are it was me. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
