welcome to iowa... home of the Drugeyes

this a non-issue I think for Iowa football, It's something pretty much every program has. yeah DJK's stuff is pretty serious but honestly, he won't even spend anytime in jail over his arrest. If it's players smoking pot at Iowa, that should be the least of Ferentz's worries. being around guys on the team here has kinda showed me D-1 athletes arent concerned about passing a drug test. Now, if the whole team was popping pills and doing blow, I'd be concerned. I feel like this is a non-issue that Ferentz has to explain to reassure the more conservative fans of the program.

Where is Tim Tebow when you need him? This year college football has a pay for play heisman winner and an entire drugged out Iowa football team. Sad

And Iowa athletes could possibly be getting around the drug tests. How on God's green earth can that happen? Don't they have people watching them do the piss test? You don't smoke pot without it showing on the piss test! I worked for 30 plus years for a place that would fire you for failing the drug test!

I played college baseball and we were also subject to random drug testing. There are ways around testing positive. No, they do not watch you pee in the cup. You would be amazed as some of the techniques used by college athletes, to drop a negative UA.

That's great! They'll feel you up just to board an airplane, but will let athletes pee in a cup in private. I wonder how they're getting around the piss test?

99% of the kids on the Iowa football team are good, hard working kids anyone would be proud to call their sons. Lets not throw the whole team and coaches under the bus because one or possibly a few players made poor decisions. How about we applaude the coach for addressing the situation the way he did. How many other coaches across the country would find out about a possible drug problem on the team and do everything in his power to find all the culprits no matter who they were.

Another thing that always gets me is how people are surprised when kids, or people in general make poor decisions. By now I would think most of us with any type of common sense or ability to think would figure out that people have a tendency to make poor decisions from time to time in their lives. I dont want to get all religous on you guys but from what I believe there has only been one person to ever live a perfect life and tragically he died 2010 years ago. It doesnt matter if your an athlete on scholarship, multi-millionaire pro athlete, priest, president of the United States, CEO, cop, housewife, ......the list goes on but nobody is perfect. Money, scholarships, powerful titles, etc will not change our human flaws.

With that said its important that we all understand that we are responsible for our actions. The Iowa football player did something that a small town boy like myself cant even comprehend and he will and should go down for his poor decision. Hopefully it will be a lesson for others to learn from so that they wont make the same mistake.

I love how people assume that a coach or parent for that matter is somehow with these kids 24 hours a day making sure that they are perfect. I think we all need to look into the mirror and think about some of the dumb things we have done in our lives that we got away with before we go on the internet and start ripping people. Most of us have the ability to make good decision about the things we do but at least once in our lives we have all done something that I am sure we regret. Some of us get away unscathed from our decision while others suffer the consequences.

Sorry for the rant but I had to get that off my chest.

My first month in professional baseball came after the McGwire and Sosa suspicions were thrown out there...2001. Minor Leaguers like myself were subjected to many a test and for the first year it was "everyone in at the same time." I had guys asking me to pee for them and what not as they smoked a little pot...they eventually found someone as I wouldn't ever do it.

The next year, it was one in, one out...you couldn't go in until someone else was done. Well, our guys would go down the street to buy "burners" at GNC that would burn it out of their skin in less than 24 hours.

They then started testing urine temp so the day of they had other guys pee in a condom on the bus and they would tie the condom in a knot to their drawstring of their shorts....

I don't get it. I'm not necessarily commenting on the above issue, but trust me, there are ways around everything...

The only thing I'll say on the above issue is, yes, ultimately Kirk Ferentz is responsible for those in his program.....BUT no, he cannot assume responsibility for all his players 24/7. They are big boys and can take care of theirselves....how about a little responsibility as men.

Sean said it best and he prolly knows more about D1 football than anyone else on this board. 10 wins and everything in the world is great, 7 wins and the program is falling apart. Sure glad the staff put together a press confernce today to knock down the rumors. They were prolly all started by ISU fans anyway.......

AMEN!! Couldn't have been said better!

Those of you spreading rumors should be ashamed of yourselves. Worse than a bunch of women at the beauty parlor.

It's a disgrace and a huge black eye for the program, not to mention the state of Iowa in general. I do like Ferentz as a coach, but as mentioned previously, he's obviously lost control of this team. Possibly time for him to go and as far as those who chose to partake in doing drugs ... they made their beds and they can lie in them. IDIOTS!!!!!

-Longspurs-

Who is the idiot now? Oh yeah, guys spreading rumors on the interwebs! That Hawkeye team is out of control!

To my knowledge only one player has been in trouble for the use of drugs. Another is suspended for academics. At least Iowa has drug testing. Most if not all SEC schools do not even drug test their student athletes. This is what I have heard. Kirk has done a fantastic job with the Iowa football program and and football players. This year they are looking to have their highest graduation rating for football players. Just because of one players mistakes does not mean he is losing control of the team. Saying that I am also not so in the dark I think DJK was the only one using drugs. But the coaches can not be there holding their hand all the time. My 2 cents.

Last year, DJK lived with Adrian Clayborn....this year Clayborn moved out and this other dude moved in. Keep grasping at straws..
I know the family of Brady Johnson, DJK's roomate. They have been roomates for atleast the last three years. I have never known of AC living with DJK. DJK and Brady both come from well to do parents and I think access to money was no problem. It was not like Brady was a starving college student trying to make extra cash to get through school. But alot of times we see kids that come from money get into more trouble because they think they are bulletproof.

I think KF tries to run a clean program knowing the problems with drugs in schools and in the NFL, which he had seen first hand. For any of you that have or are trying to raise kids these days it's tuff. And that those of you that havent yet just wait till you try to keep track of whats going on with your own let alone 85 football players.

DJK is 23 years old. If KF needs to hold his hand still that kid is going to have more problems in his life if he does not learn from this. Droptine37 said it best and like said before would have the most knowlege of what goes on at the D1 level.

I'm willing to bet that this is far from over. How many times during the press conference yesterday, did Barta admit that some of the players found ways around the drug testing and they are looking into that issue. Take that as you will, but I'm guessing after the season is over, there will be a bigger investigation and you will see more names being brought up.

I don't have any factual information on this subject, but I sure hope it is over as I hate to read bad news like this concerning any college kid, let alone someone that had such a bright future and now by his own foolish actions he may have damaged that significantly.

Beyond that, if there are any drug users still on the team now I would surely expect them to kick the habit or transfer or something, because they would certainly have to be aware that going forward that the likelihood of getting caught is quite high. (Pardon the pun. :D)

But one possible explanation as to why Barta talked about the possibility of there having been ways around the testing is that it could be an oblique explanation of how someone like DJK could remain on the team subsequent to drug testing. It figures that somewhere in the past DJK "passed" a drug test because all athletes get at least 1 test per year from what I have read. If his drug use was not a recent development, it stands to reason then that he may have been someone that "beat" the test in the past.

Very well said IMO, I agree. I have many people that work for me and despite many and various warnings and advice that we provide to the group REPEATEDLY, some of them still proceed to do DUMB things. I suppose to some it would appear that I need to watch them closer or somehow it is my fault, etc. Well, what we really need to get back to is some PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.

I am very tired of hearing about something being someone elses fault all the time. Unless Ferentz supplied the narcotics to DJK or knew about it and did nothing, etc, then DJK is responsible for his actions, not his coach.

If after all this dust clears it is such that just one player, DJK, is found to be a drug abuser, then as unfortunate as that is for him, that is really a pertty clean program in my mind. Because I am pretty sure if you took a random sampling of a 100 college students and submitted them to drug testing, you would have more than just one come back as a positive.
