I've got three different plots ready to be planted. What do i plant? Id like to have a early season one late season one and one that has both. All together prolly 10 acers total. What should i plant?

I have Buck Forage Oats for sale....if that helps. 100lbs to the acre. I have used these for fall plots myself and they have worked real well. Planting anytime from Aug 15th to Sept 15th. $30.00/50lb bag.

Well, you have 3 plots for a total of 10 acres. If it was me I would decide what part of the season do want to hunt the most, and plant the biggest plot for that.

Turnips/Rape/other brassicas are a good LATE season attaractant. Oats/Rye/WW/Peas also make a good all season attractant, however, once you get some serious freezing, they will move on to other things. If you want a plot to comeback for next year, you could fall seed a clover/chicory mix, but it wont be worth much to hunt over this year.

I agree with 311's thoughts...

I prefer to set up a three plot system that includes clover, brassicas and rye/oats/peas in the third.

I often plant strips of all three within a plot so that each plot has something for all seasons. Corn and soybeans are awesome draws for those capable of planting them but otherwise the combination above is idea.

Check my threads in dbltree's corner for spefic "how to's" on each of those subjects.

If you read thru the cereal grain thread you'll see that I tested BFO oats against common spring oats and in side by side tests, deer absoultely refused to touch the BFO's...so don't waste your money on expensive seeds.

Rye and oats can usually be purchased from your local co-op and small seeds like brassicas can be purchased by the pound from places such as Welter Seed.

Check out the threads...lot's of info and probally hundreds of pics by now...;)

I was thinking of planting outfitters blend in one. Double Cross in another. Have any of you planted these? DBLTree what would you plant?

I almost never plant commercial seed blends because they are just to darned expensive and accomplish nothing that common seed from my local sources can't do.

Both Biologic and Whitetail Institute have good seed but it is way over priced and deer ware not attracted to it anymore then then the same seeds/plants purchased for far less.

Right now I have WTI's clover planted beside clover from Welters that costs a fraction as much and they are mowing the Welters clovers.

I'm sorry...I know that's not what you want to hear but buying those seeds is like "burning" money IMO as DC is just an overpriced clover blend and brassicas which is a HORRIBLE combination! They don't compete well at ALL!

The outfitters blend also contains brassicas and they should be planted seperately now through early August and the grains around the first of Sept.

If you can't find rye, peas and oats locally or from Welters then I would plant that mix rather then the one from WTI but plant it the last week of August. If you only have a smal plot the OB might be easier for you but it would be expensive for larger plots.

Cereal rye is by far the best fall grain as it is highest in protien and $13 a bag, oats for 7-9 bucks and a bag of field peas for 20 bucks is what I would look for, especially if you have to pay shipping on the OB.

Regardless if you go with the OB or local seeds read thru my thread on cereal grains for plantings times, rates and the reasons for planting rye versus wheat and more information.

I had good luck last year by planting clover and rye in a fall plot. The rye seemed to help keep the weeds down this spring and built up my soil, as well as providing a winter food source. The clover also grew well and then TOOK OFF this spring, all I had to do was mow down the rye. Worked great!

I also tried brassicas and clover together which did very poor. The clover did well though :)

Clover seems to work 100% but for me brassicas is 50/50 on whether the deer will take to it. There is also alfalfa but that to me was hard to establish, although I eventually rented out 6 acres to put some in. Lots of options and alot of fun deciding and experimenting. Good luck!

I would recommend a ww, oats and pea plot also for one, then brassicas for another plot. If you go with turnips instead of rape be prepared for the deer to love the tops and not touch the actual turnips. Some people say they tear the turnips up and some have luck like I did. I think the turnips are an aquired taste myself and if they are planted yearly the deer start to like them.

I planted turnips next to rape in the bio-logic fall premium perennial mix and they tore than mix up while hardly touching the turnips. There would be 10+ deer in the bio-logic and maybe one in the turnips. Possum loved those turnips tho so they did not go to waste. :)
