What do you do??

What do you do with your deer when you’re done processing it? Assuming you do it yourself. Is there an acceptable/legal way to dispose of the carcass? I'm tired of finding them in the ditches and under bridges. I have been burning mine lately, but the dog and cats from all over the county usually show up for the barbeque

My problem is I only get garbage pick up twice a month. Things can get a little funky smelling around the farm if I wait for the garbage truck

I ask the landowners if I can dump them in a brush pile or ditch on their ground. Usually they don't care so long as I'm killing does!

Leave it in an open field that you can sneak up at dusk and snipe some 'yotes off it. After a week or so throw it in a brushy spot, they don't last too long that way. You have to handle it twice but hey, its worth it for fun shooting.

I know this is hard to do in Iowa but try to toss them in areas away from heavily farmed areas. I asked a farmer once to dump some back in a brushpile and he declined me. Apparently he'd had a tire punctured by a sharp bone once.

Is it legal to toss them off a bridge in the river. I'm thinking not but I don't know if I've ever heard officially.

Techincally, once you tag a deer it is your property. Therefore, I would presume that dumping it in a ditch would be just as illegal as dumping your old refrigerator in that same ditch. I hate seeing them in ditches and creeks too. I usually haul them off to a corner of my property and let the yotes have at them. Some friends of mine have a pit dug that they all go into and then bury them later on. I have not tried it, but I also think the landfills will take them?

For the record, I did some research today on this topic. Dumping your deer carcass on public property (i.e. road ditch or under a bridge) is illegal , and cosidered littering. I also called the local landfill and the lady on the phone, rather reluctantly, said that while they dont like to take them they have never turned any away.

When I had the contract for roadkill pickup, I was ONLY ALLOWED to take them to the landfill. I think it is still that way. And for anyone who considers wanting this contract, don't do it, it's nasty and you DO NOT get to keep any antlers.
