What has been bagged while bow hunting deer?

I have heard guys tell of shooting squirrels while bowhunting deer. A few years back I would get a fall turkey tag in case one would come by, but I stopped. I had a wonderful shot at a coyote, but judged the distance to far and shot over it. I've had other chances at them but brush has foiled me a number of times. I can't think of anything I would be willing to mess up a good deer stand over, other than a coyote. Maybe this year. I had one come out of a corn field the other day while scouting. I had my muzzleloader along and thought I was going to get him but he winded me at the last second and reversed march.

Over my 28 years of bowhunting I have killed 2 coons, two fox (one red one gray) and a pheasant with my bow from a deer stand. I have also missed one fox which I would rather not discuss since it was the closest of all of them.

I used to hunt an area that was near a housing development and feral dogs would mercilessly harrass the deer. You can take that information wherever you want your imagination to go.

Missed three coyotes during bow season last year. Two were excellent shots at 25-30 yards and I shot just over the critter both times. The third was a low percentage shot through the brush that I only took because the miserable fleabag had just chased a heavy beamed 10 pointer off of a path that would have given me a "chip shot". Seeing this really made me wonder just how many deer coyotes DO kill or seriously injure. During my years of bowhunting I've bagged both squirrels and cottontails from the tree as well. Only 4 days left...Good Hunting!

Sorry for getting off the subject but when ya'll mention coyotes it brings back to mind when my brother-in-law shot a very nice buck up there. The shot was a little far back and we let him lay over night. When we found him the next morning he was missing one complete ham....coyotes. Thank goodness they didn't destroy the neck area.

Yea,coyote always eat the ass out first.Years ago, with a little snow on the ground and some wind I hunted deer in standing corn the still hunt way.Got a fox.I got 12 yrds. away when he looked at me,But,it was to late.I was at full draw and nailed him.I must have freaked him out because he just froze.

While bowhunting I have taken a red fox, squirrels, a ringneck and a rabbit. I shot a buck last evening right at dark(in MD) and thought it best to let him go until this morning, when I walked up on him there was a red fox feeding on the hindquarters. Lost about half of the hindquarters but the rest was fine.

I don't hold any favorites from the deer stand as long as it is in season and I have a license for it.

Shot a squirrel one time and while he was jumping up & down on the arrow a doe came up and started sniffing him. I had squirrel & venison that night.

Never fails, though everytime I load a judo for a pesky squirrel the deer show up. I laugh at myself trying to change arrows.

I shot at a coyote one morning but had forgot my armguard and my baggy sleeve got hit by the bowstring and made a "fwap" noise. He was 23 steps from me and the arrow hit right where he had been but his reaction to the noise had him clear of it by 6 feet.

Gotta have fun while I'm out there, can't get too serious.

Sadly I had to take out a chipmunk while elk huting this month. Just would not stop barking at my setup.

I guess there's not much room for error regardless of range, but my shot came from 5 yards. Chipmunk was up in a tree at about a 45 degree angle. Lost my arrow of course, but there was no choice. Center-cut, took everything out of there instantly. Next time I'll just move.

THE FUNNIEST THING I HAVE DONE WHILE BOWHUNTING DEER ,OUTSIDE OF THE NORMAL RELM OF STUPIDITY, WAS A UNI-COON.. YEP BACK IN 87 WHILE AT WALDORF COLLEGE I HAD THE CHANCE TO HUNT THE LEASED GROUND SOUTH OF PILOT KNOB STATE PARK. THIS COON WANTED MY TREE .AFTER THE THIRD TRY TO VACATE MY FROM MY STAND, HE LOOKED UP AT THE S.O.B. THAT JUST KNOCKED HIM OUT OF THE TREE WITH AN ASTRO BOW BLOW TO THE HEAD, I HAD TO TAKE HIM OUT. I AM NOT A GREAT SHOT BUT SOMETIMES THINGS WORK. I PUT MY 125 T.HEAD BACKED WITH A 2117 RIGHT BETWEEN HIS EYES. AND LET ME TELL YOU THIS IS NOT A GOOD IDEA..... YOU CAN NOT IMAGINE THE RACKET HE MADE RUNNING INTO EVERY PRICKLY ASH TREE AND ROSR BUSH FOR 30 YARDS. NEVER AGAIN...THEY CAN HAVE MY STAND.... M350 OUT

Forgot to mention in my earlier post I also shot a turkey while bowhunting for deer and to many tomcats to remember them all. (MAN I HATE CATS!)

Bobcat

Well, you can add coyote to my list. Just took one Sunday morning. First one ever.

Also forgot to mention one red squirrel, one gray squirrel, and one red fox.

Had to pass on bobcat and turkey right under my stand due to no tags.

I have been hunting for 23 years now. In that time from my tree stand I have taken a turkey, red fox, some scraggly cats, 3 raccoons, black bird, skunk(not a good idea), pocket gopher and some rabbits.

I just started hunting some new ground that my brother in law picked up south of Exira. I was told that in order to hunt it I had to shoot every FREAKIN coon I saw.

First night there, this was opening weekend as the sun was starting to slide, I thought, Wow, turkeys coming my way. Cool. (I heard some gobbles and what I thought may have been scratches.)

Nope, coons. A damn city of Coons! Now I was pissed cause this was a deer super highway. Didn't waste a broadhead, field point at 35 yards.

Racket? Hell yea! Fun? Damn Straight.

I can't imagine there's anyone in Iowa this year who doesn't want less raccoons. I have seen them almost every night from my stand. Predator numbers seem really high as well. I was thinking about taking a rifle to my stand after I'm done bowhunting to clear some of them out.

When the deer hunting stinks (as it has around here the last couple of weeks), you have time to scheme on "secondary targets". I've got my sights set on a trophy squirrel that I've had in close range on about 5 occasions...each time he ducks behind a tree before I can get an arrow off. I'll fix him...next time my Ruger 10-22 is going to the tree with me !!

You may want to reconsider taking a bow and gun to the stand with you out side of muzzle loader season.

The only thing I bagged today was two sandwiches, four cookies and a fist full of Jerky I made last week.

I always wondered if I piss off the deer spirits when I chew some jerky in the stand....

I shot my first coon a couple weeks ago. It was about ten yards a way. It was the biggest coon I've ever seen. At leat 20lbs!
I couldn't beleive it. It was a fat thing!
